My family is from Ewart, Iowa. The community of Ewart was founded by 3 brothers, sons of a Robert Ewart of Mt. Gilliad (sp.), Ohio. The three, Robert, Thomas and Matthew are interred in the Ewart Cemetary in Powasheik County, Iowa. A fourth brother, James, lived near Jefferson City, Missouri and was a banker there. I believe he is also interred in the Ewart Cemetary. Robert's son James was my grandfather. James and his wife Henrietta had four children, Lyle, Dauphin, James and Betty. Dauphin was my father. If this group of Ewarts holds any interest to you, contact me by e-mail and I will provide you with any information I have. Sincerely, Ned Ewart

Hi, first, thanks for the response. Well, there are two( I think ) Ewart families that ended up in same area of Ohio. "Mine" first came to Knox Co.,Oh and there, Robert married Eliza Kerr, d/o James and elizabeth Kerr. they had three childre. I can only recall the name of O.C. Ewart now. He went with his uncle, Robert Kerr to Marion/ crawford Co.,OH. O.C. worked in the banking business all over that area with his uncle, robert Kerr and his father-in-law William Blair( O.C. married Adella Blair). I have no information on O.C. and Adella's cildren, as yet. i don't know where his brother and sister ended up. If they were like most of this large, extended clan-they ended up in that same area of OHIO. Now, there is a Don Wiggens who has Ewarts in this same area-some in delaware Co., also. I wrote to him a long time ago and never got a response. he is supposed to have a big gedcom file, but I never found it. ( If you do, let me know). There are not numerous ewarts in this world, so probably a connection with his. I have information from another researcher who didn't have a lot on my ewart/Kerr line. E-mail me as a reminder and I will get her files out for you.i have my daughter's old computer, so i keep nothing on it-too unreliable and I'm afraid of a loss. Yhanks, Patti

Thanks for the reply. You are right, there are at least two famlies in Ohio. I had some information incorrect in my original e-mail. My ancestor was Thomas (not Robert) Ewart. He was from Fermanagh County, Ireland and came to Ohio, probably in the 1820's or 30's. He and his wife Sarah Kelrey had 6 children, one of whom was named Robert. He was born in 1841 in Morrow County (then Deleware County), Ohio. He was my great-grandfather. He and at least one of his brothers moved to Iowa and extablished the town of Ewart in Poweshiek County, Iowa.

The info you have documented in the message board sounds interesting.
I have a James Ewart who married a Mary McCullough and they lived
in Ottawa County, KS. The 1895 KS census stated James came from
Iowa to KS. HMMM Sounds suspicious. Regretfully I have all my
facts and figures at home, but if you would email me I'd sure
would appreciate it. If this is a match, James has a ggdau alive in
Minneapolis, KS. Also James' father was a Thomas. Please email me
at kathymac@midusa.net. I have genealogy that I'd be happy to
share.

Hi Ned. Gina suggested that you might be a source of info about Ewart, Iowa. I'd love a picture of some sort - a "Welcome to Ewart" sign would be ideal! Any ideas?

I can't find your e-mail address so apologies for posting this in a public forum.

Thanks, David.

In regards to the town of Ewart and that family, my great grandmother, Maggie Ferson was a house servant for Robert Ewart as was listed in the 1880 census. I am trying to find any info on her time spent working for that family and or photos that she may be in. She came from Ireland in 1879 and I believe came to that area because of family already living there. I have been to Ewart-or what is left of the town several times and photographed many of the grave stones and probably can get a picture or two also of the area.
Hope to hear back from you,
Cheryl

Surnames: Ewart, Clark, White, Kirkpatrick,Titus, Rail, First
I descend from a line of Ewart's who also came from Ireland to Washington Co., PA. James Ewart is first found on an early census, maybe 1800. We think he came just after the Rev. War. He had sons David bn 1 Jun 1785(my ancestor)one record shows him born in Ireland,Joseph, and 4 daughters. David and his family moved on a flatboat down the Ohio River and settled in Butler Co., OH. David was married to Hannah Clark. His brother Joseph married Mary Rail and died in Butler Co. David and his family went on to Brookville, Franklin Co. OH where David died in 1830. Hannah and children moved to Warren, Huntington Co., IN where she died in 1860. Their children were James S (marr. Charlotte White), John C born 1810 PA, Jane (marr. Israel First), William *my ancestor (marr 1st Elizabeth Titus, 2nd Sarah Kirkpatrick & 1 other), Mahlon D., David E., Samuel C., & Joseph E.B. Ewart brn 1827 in Franklin Co. Others were born in OH, except first 2 boys born PA, and maybe Jane in PA. Some left IN later including my William and moved to Greenup, Cumberland Co. IL. My great grandfather was Thoms Kirkpatrick Ewart born 1862 in Greenup, IL and died 1948 in Helena, Phillips Co. AR. I don't know if any of the descendants of my James migrated to Iowa or not. I would really like to know where in Ireland they came from. I've been to Ireland twice, have fallen in love with the country, and have traveled from east to west and north to south, and plan to go again, maybe next year. It would be nice to find the hometown of James Ewart. I've collected a few items that have the Ewart name on them, but it would be great to walk on their soil. My mother was a Ewart. Her older brother was another David Ewart.
