Hello,

I am trying to find any information on James Ewart and his wife Sarah Smith (B 1828 Ireland, D 1904 NJ). Depending on the Census, they state they were born either in Ireland or Scotland. I have found them in the 1860, 1870, 1880 and 1900 censuses in Mercer County, NJ.

The two have James Jr, John S, Jane, Sarah, Smith, Wilson, Mary.

My family stems from James Jr's line. He married Mary Cox (1854-1926) and had Joseph Rash, Sarah Hester, Carrie, James Cox, Elmer E, Howard, and John Jones.

My family line descends through Sarah Hester Ewart (B 1876-D 1900). She was born in NJ and traveled to Massac County, Illinois in the mid to late 1890s to help care for her ailing aunt (Mrs. J.R. Jones, Mary Cox's sister). Once her aunt died, she returned to NJ, but Thomas Parker followed and the two were married in NJ before returning to Massac County. On 26 Dec 1899, Sarah gave birth to Mary and in February she passed away from complications. Mary is my great grandmother.

I have some letters written between Sarah and her parents in NJ and the parents to Thomas and his daughter. But I have been unable to find much information about Sarah's grandparents (James Sr and Sarah Smith).

Can anyone help lead me in the right direction? I know that the two arrived in the US before 1848, as James Jr was born in Westchester NY in 1848, but I cannot find them in the 1850 census.

Thank you
Erin
