The EWANCHUK name meaning

Hello Janet,

During my own family research, I found out a number of thinks that you might find interesting

EWANCHUK/CHOUK/CHAK/CHEK/CHOK/CHIK/CHYK, or ending with CK or simply C
EWANCZUK/CZOUK/CZAK/CZEK/CZOK/CZIK/CZYK, or ending with CK or simply C
are all Eastern Europe names. The last vowel roughly indicates the origin country or region.
For instance CHUK/CZUK is probably of Ukrainian origin. Some of the other names come from Poland.

I identify two other name series which belong to the same category :
IWANCHUK/CHOUK/CHAK/CHEK/CHOK/CHIK/CHYK, or ending with CK or simply C
IWANCZUK/CZOUK/CZAK/CZEK/CZOK/CZIK/CZYK, or ending with CK or simply C

Sometimes, the W is spelled V (as it should be pronouced), and the ending is with CIC, like in IVANCIC. This greatly multiplies the combinations. Some ex-Jugoslavia people say that the termination IC is of Serb origin.

My guess about the EWANCHUK name origin is the following :
- first hypothesis : the name comes from the very popular Eastern first name IVAN. It this case, EWANCHUK would mean "the little IVAN".
- second hypothesis : all throughout the Autro-Hungarian or the Russian empire were many towns and villages bearing a name related to IVAN, such as IVANOVO, or IVANCICE. The name EWANCHUK would then mean "the person coming from IVANOVO" or "from IVANCICE".

From the above, we may assume that there is very little chance that two people bearing the same name are related, unless the relation can be clearly established through other means than the family name resemblance.

This is definitely not a common name. I
found a total of 6 people with the last name
Iwanczuk on the Social Sec. deceased rolls
in NY and only 14 for the whole U. S.

My grandfather on my father's side was Alec
(or Alek, or possibly Alexi) Iwanczuk. You
are correct, he was from the Ukraine, which
my aunt claims is also known as "White Russia".

Alek emigrated to the U. S. around the turn
of the century. I don't know if he was married
at the time, but his wife's maiden name was
Catherina Kastalska. I suspect he lived
in NYC for some time. He then moved to
upstate NY where he farmed his entire life.

He died in that late 50s.

Alec had two sons, James and William. At some
point, my father contracted the name to
Evans, and my birth certificate shows this
name but my dad never legally changed the
name.

I have lots of relatives in NYC according
to my aunt Ann on my father's side. I don't
know any of their names, but I'm trying to
get some info.

This has been LONG, but I thought I'd give
as much as needed. Maybe an Evanchuk/Ewanchuk/
Iwanczuk is out there reading.

Thanks!!!

None of those names sound familiar. We do have
some Canadian ancestry in the family but
it is on the French-Canadian side near upstate
New York.

I believe our original name is spelled
Iwanczuk which was bastardized by Ellis
Island officials to Evanchuk......

Looking for connections.

Does anybody of the same surname have any ancestry to a village in Ukraine or Poland by the name of Dolgomosciska or something similar?

My grandfather's name was Elias Iwanczuk and
his wife's maiden name was Catharina
Podstawaska. My father's birth certificate
information lists the letters k, d, and e
followed by what appears to be names of cities
in Russia/Ukraine.

My grandfather's list is:

k - Synicholouka
d - not readable
e - Galicia

My grandmother's are:

k - Siredn Selo
d - Listro
e - Galicia

I have been able to get into the Ellis Is.
Records and can't find Elias Iwanczuk or
Catharina Podstawska for 1892 - 1924. My
brother remembers that my grandfather was a
minor local official in the town in Russia/
Ukraine where he lived. My grandmother was
of some minor royalty heritage.

I suspect that the two lived in the NYC area
before moving to upstate New York (Albany)
area. The name Iwanczuk got bastardized along
the way to Evanchuk, although my father, for
reasons unknown, changed his name (not legally)
to Evans.

I am digging through the census records to
find any Iwanczuk that is on the list. It's
very slow going; I suspect when I get to the
Russian/Ukranian roots, the path will certainly
disappear.

Thanks for any info/input!!

Looking for family tree information on the last name Ewaniszyk...not sure if the spelling changed. Great grandfather's name is Michael and he married Pauline Wavershak (not sure if that spelling changed) and came to New York. Any info out there? Thanks!

The name EWANISZYK is most certainly a
corrupted form of EWANTSZYK. The T has been
transformed into an I at some time.

possible relation?

They may be related to my grandfather Iwan Iwanchuk. He moved to the Vernon area from Bellis/Gold Creek/Vegreville AB in the 1930s.
