Classification: Query
Surnames: EVILSIZER, UEBELSHAEUSER,
I have been asked many times if I could help to identify
this first settler in Virginia around 1782. I am (actually I just
retired from my hobby, and my research material is being
shipped to the 'Sons of the American Revolution Library for
general research) a researcher of Hessian soldiers who remained in America after the American Revolution.
Today I reveived a new inquiry asking me for help from an
Evilsizer descendant, which prompts me to quote what I
wrote to the Rootsweb mailing list AMREV-HESSIANS-L@
rootsweb.com, on Feb. 1, 2004.

On Jan 31, I received a query from Pat, her e-mail is
mountainmama57@webtv.net and she asked:
Looking for Hessian Soldier Jakob Uebelschauzzer in
Rev War 1776 from Hesse, Germany, captured 1777 and
returned in 1781 to Germany and repatriated in 1782.
Found on VA tax records from 1782 to 1827. Anglisized
name was Evilsizer or Evelsheiser and other spellings.
Thanks, Pat.

My answer to the AMREV-HESSIANS list with copies to
the known descendants was given 1. Feb.2004:

Hello Uebelhaeuser researchers;
Everyone who owns or had a look at my Guide has seen in
my alphabetical listings the name
UEBELSHAUSER, Nikolaus, K-22, S#134, D2-Oct.1777,

In addition to this one, there was listed in Hetrina I (S#131)
UEBELSHAEUSER, Jacob, from Dodenhausen D3579, and
UEBELSHAEUSER, Johannes from Battenhausen D3591.

Jacob was discharged in Germany in Oct. 1782,
Johannes was still on the Battalions Muster Roll in Feb.1783.

First time I was approached about this name (this mystery)
was by Sandi Koscak, who has researched Jacob and
found out that this soldier Jacob did indeed return to Germany
but remained there, married there, and died in the 1800's in
Germany. In other words, she didn't think this was the right
Jacob.

This still leaves the Hesse-Kassel Jaeger Nikolaus, who
deserted in October 1777, unaccounted for, and I wonder
if anybody has came across his name somewhere in your
tireless search for the name Uebelshaeuser.

I may add at this point that there is not only this Rootsweb
Message Board, but I read that Sandi was so active on other
Boards, and that she not only wrote a book about her
descendant, but also published a newsletter.
Very active lady, and with all these leads the truth should
come out, this mystery cleared up. Perhaps Jacob did come
back, so many others did, and the one in Germany was
a different Jacob.
With this I leave this subject alone, I cannot check anything
out anymore, my research material is practically on the way
to Louisville, Kentucky.
Wishing everybody good luck in their search for roots,
I remain
