NEW CASTLE, PA. – Joseph M. Evanoski, 95, formerly of Shenango Township, New Castle, PA passed away the evening of Feb. 28, 2014, at the Golden Hill Nursing Home.
Joe was born Nov. 18, 1918, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He was the son of Michael and Gertrude Lewandowski Evanoski.
Joe married the former Gertrude Komsa.
They were married for 65 wonderful years. She preceded him in death Dec. 21, 2011.
He was Roman Catholic and a member of St. Joseph the Worker Parish.
Joe enlisted with the U. S. Army on Dec. 12, 1942.
Mr. Evanoski was a member of the Military Police.
Joseph served in a military police detachment attached to an Army, Air Force group overseas in England, France, Germany, and Holland. He acted as Military Police Sergeant on motor patrol work on motorcycle and in cars.
Mr. Evanoski did traffic work in conquered areas, and controlled movements of civilian and military personnel. Joseph received many decorations and citations, among those the Good Conduct Medal, Distinguished Unit Badge, European-Africa-Middle East Campaign Medal with 2 Bronze Stars, and the World War II Victory Medals. Joseph was honorably discharged on Dec. 2, 1945.
Joe retired after 44 years of service as a Kiln Placer at the former Shenango China Company. Mr. Evanoski was also a produce farmer in Shenango Township for more than 50 years. Joe was a member of the several clubs and originations, including Casimir Pulaski Club, St. Vincent De Paul Society, St. Joseph the Worker choir for 50 years.
In 1988, Mr. Evanoski was named Man of the Year.
Joe is survived by two sons, Robert J. (Tina) Evanoski of Jenison, Michigan and Charles P. (Cynthia) Evanoski of Wexford, Pa.; three daughters, Marilyn J. (Daryl) Neve, Carol A. (Tony) Bartley and Lori A (Dale) Colich, all of New Castle, PA.; a daughter-in-law, Karen Evanoski of New Castle; brother, Walter Evanoski of Youngstown, Ohio; two sisters, Emily Dolak of Florida and Clara Gittings of Moorestown, N.J.; 17 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Mr. Evanoski was preceded in death by four brothers, Raymond, Edward, Leo, and William Evanoski; and two sisters, Bernice Sylak, and Martha Serwatka.
Calling hours are from 5 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, March 5, 2014, at the Noga Funeral Home Inc., 1142 S. Mill St.
The New Castle Area Honor Guard will perform full military honors for Joseph at 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
A procession will leave the funeral home at 9:30 a.m. for St. Joseph the Worker Parish, where a Mass of Christian Burial and Rite of Committal will be celebrated at 10 a.m.
Burial will be at SS Philip and James Cemetery.
