NAPA VALLEY, CALIFORNIA – Hedwig “Hedy” Husich passed away peacefully with her son, Frank, whom she loved deeply at her side, at 6:50 a.m. on May 1, 2012.

She lived a long, healthy and beautiful life, always surrounded and supported by her family and friends.

Hedy was born on May 14, 1916, at St. Elizabeth Heath Center in Youngstown, Ohio (Mahoning County) to Sophia and Simon Evanko.

She was a parishioner and attended Sts. Peter and Paul School, Ursuline High School and Miami University of Ohio.

In 1940, she married Frank J. Husich, whom she lost to death in 1957.

Following his death, Hedy enrolled in and graduated from nursing school.
She went on to a long and rewarding career as a nurse at St. Elizabeth Health Center, specializing primarily in pediatrics. She loved working with the young children.

There she formed many deep friendships and acquaintances, including the boxer Ray “Boom Boom” Mancini.

After her retirement from nursing, she devoted herself to caring for her beloved mother, Sophia.

Following her mother’s passing in 1991, Hedy set out on a new and bold adventure.
She sold her home in Youngstown and moved to the San Francisco Bay Area to be near her son, Frank.

For 15 years, she has her own apartment at the exquisite Grosvenor House on Nob Hill, where she overlooked the city.

There again, she found many friends and acquaintances, including Robert Goulet. How excited she was! At Grosvenor she was known to many as simply “Mama.”

While living at Grosvenor House, Hedy was diagnosed with breast cancer and underwent treatment. Her disease went into full remission and never emerged again. Her strength and courage were never more clearly displayed than during those terrifying days and defined her as a very special person.

When Hedy needed more care and attention, she moved again to the love, care and friendship of Choctow House in the beautiful Napa Valley.

As was her habit, she found new friends in both the residents and staff. Because they meant so much to one another, “Hedy’s Chair” will be memorialized and remain at Choctow House in her memory.

She is survived by her son, Frank J.; daughter-in-law Julie; and grandsons FJ and Paris.

She will be buried at Calvary Cemetery on Friday, May 18, at 11 a.m.
She will be at rest next to her husband, Frank and her parents, Sophie and Simon.

There will be a memorial Mass and reception on June 10, 2012 at 3 p.m. at Sts. Peter and Paul Church, 421 Covington St. in Youngstown, OH.

“Don’t cry because it’s over, smile because it happened."
