Up to 1918 it was Austria-Hungary empire where 12 different languages were spoken.
Birds of a feather fly together. Our ancestors married within same region, religion [few exceptions] but for sure common language to communicate in and common tradition to observe.
Just because there is Austria on the US record does not automatically mean that your ancestor came from present Austria. When I see Czechoslovakia, Slovakish, Slovakian on an US census that is the place I go former Czechoslovakia, that is.
