Mary Jane EVA, b 1856, Cardiff

Mary Jane EVA, b 1856, Cardiff

I am searching for the birth records of my great grandmother, Mary Jane EVA, who was born, according to census records from 1881 onwards, in Cardiff in 1856.

Her marriage certificate, to Henry Gilbert LOVELL in Newport Registry Office in 1875, showed her age as 19, her resdience as 1 James Street, Newport, and her father as Thomas EVA (deceased) an engine fitter.

This is all the information that I have on her and have therefore hit a brick wall! I'd just love to find her birth records...

Can anybody help please?

Philip I have a lot of information about the EVA's, but I have nothing that ties in with the birth you are looking for. I have no record of any EVA's living in the Cardiff area, or anywhere else in Wales in the 1850's and 1860's. Have you managed to find them in the earlier censuses.
One possibility is that the birth was perhaps registered or at least indexed as EVANS.
If I can be of any further help contact me directly on my e-mail address.

Hi Dave,

I've really hit a brick wall here! I've asked the Cardiff Registrar's office to search their records and they have been unsuccessful. Like you, they confirm that there were no EVA's in Cardiff.

All I've got to go on is her marriage certificate, her death certificate and the census records for 1881, 1891 and 1901. All the census records state her place of birth as Cardiff, and all records (census and certificates) point to her year of birth as 1856.

I have found a BMD index reference to a Mary Jane Eva born in Truro in 1858. If that MJ's father is Thomas, then could that be my Mary?

Mary Jane is also my great grandmother but I haven't been able to find out anything else about her - but am still looking!
Will let you know if anything turns up.

My 'gut' feeling about Mary EVA is that she was born in Cornwall to Thomas EVA. There are a couple of births of a Mary Jane around 1856/1858 and the 1861 & 1871 do show a couple of Mary Eva's with Thomas.

I'd guess that her birth place shown as Cardiff is not correct and I suspect that Mary believed that she was born there. The Registrar's office in Cardiff have searched their registers and cannot find any details of such births in the Cardiff area.

Thanks for your help on this. I'll order a few of the birth certificates and see if I can find out anything. I'll let you know if I do.

One thing that I did notice was that on the marriage certificate of Henry Gilbert Lovell and Mary Eva her address in 1875 is given as 1 James Street Newport. At the 1971 census there is a Thomas Evans living at that address. I did try and trace him back but could not find any sign of a Mary Jane living with his family in 1861. I think its just a co-incidence and Evans is such a common Welsh name.

Bye for now and thanks so much. Sue

I've had a bit of a breakthrough. My mother#s cousin has been in touch with me and mentioned a cousin, Joshua Pocock and Robert and Jessie Pocock.
Tracing these back, I have found a link between the Pococks and the Eva families in that a Harriet Eva married Thomas Pocock in 1864. The line becomes a little more complex in that between the 1861 and 1881 census, Harriet is listed as married to a Robert Clarke (1861), Thomas Pocock (1871) and Robert Clarke (1881). I can't find a marriage between Harriet and Robert Clarke and I suspect that he was her common law husband.
