Richard Eva, Sapper, born c 1835
My great great grandfather was Richard Eva, born in Devon c 1835. He was a sapper in the Royal Engineers, was posted to Gibraltar where he met and married Maria Alexio, then posted to Malta where his first son was born. I believe, but am not certain, that his parents were William Eva and Maria ?Dodd. I also believe that he died in the UK but have no details. Does this sound familiar to anyone? Thanks

Re: Richard Eva, Sapper, born c 1835
Richard Eva, born about 1836, son of William and Maria (nee Dodd) appear on my tree. Richard is a first cousin, 4 times removed. The last information I have on Richard is from the 1851 census. By 1861 he wasn't living at home with his parents, but doesn't appear to be anywhere else in the 1861 census either. You saying about him being in the Royal Engineers in Gibraltar and later in Malta could explain this. Do you have any other known details which could then be checked out.

Re: Richard Eva, Sapper, born c 1835
Hi. I'm sorry I never replied to your message, I've only just seen it! I do have more information but of his family once he marries. There is a military record, his discharge papers, which I found in findmypast - it looks like it is him from the service record, though I cannot confirm it. I'll contact you again as soon as I have the paperwork to hand. Off the top of my head I can tell you that my Richard Eva married Maria Alexio (Gibraltarian girl), they went to Malta where they had their first son Adolphus (whose middle names are Publius and Henry - the first the saint name of the church where he was baptised and the second after Richard's youngest brother, if I've got the right one). I went to Malta a couple of years ago and spoke to the parish priest of St Publius in Floriana, Valetta, who shoed me the hand written record of the baptism in the arish books! Maria returns to Gibraltar without Richard but pregnant with their second child, who is born in Gibraltar and named Richard too. He is my ancestor. Hope this helps
