Crushed under the wheels of the United Electric Railways bus which ran over him at Empire and Fountain streets yesterday morning, Fred Rivers, 55, a roomer at 16 Cope street, was killed, almost instantly.
The operator of the bus, whose attention was first drawn to the accident when passing motorists in a Massachusetts machine shouted to him that he had struck a man, was Lester H. Garrigan, 31, of Middle street, Apponaug. Charged with manslaughter by Providence police, Garrigan pleaded not guilty at a special session of the Sixth District Court and was released in $2000 bail for trial Sept. 12.
According to police, Garrigan was operating the bus on Empire street, and when motorists shouted to him, he stopped the heavy vehicle and got out. He discovered River's body in front of the left rear wheel. The front wheels had passed over the victim.
Dr Stanley Davies, who arrived in an ambulance summoned from the Rhode Island Hospital pronounced Rivers dead. Medical Examiner Dr Clifford H Griffin pronounced death accidental and gave permission for removal of the body to the McMurrough & Todd undertaking rooms.
Identification of the body was made by Thomas Gregory, who conducts the Cope street rooming house. He said Rivers had lived there for eight or nine weeks, and has a sister, Mrs Joseph Euleau, in Littleton, N.H.
