Hi - I don't know how much help this will be to you but I wanted to pass on to you this info:

John Nicholas Etchen was of German descent. He was born in Terrnich, Belgium in 1811. He died NOvember 23, 1872 at McCutchenville, Ohio and is buried at St. Bonifac Cemetery, New Reigel, Ohio. He married Catherine, a cherokee Indian. (Indian maidens were shipped overseas to Belgium and sold as slaves during the War of 1812. They returned to the United States after their marriage to reclaim the land they had rights to.)Catherine died February 23, 1873 and is buried at St. Boniface Cemetery, New reigel, Ohio.

John was a servant. John and Catherine came to America from Germany on June 13, 1834 with their six children. They sailed on the ship "John Jay". In 1850, John lived in Blanchard Township, Putnam County, Ohio. In 1860, he lived in Seneca Township, Seneca County, Ohio. In 1880, he lived in Monterey Township, Putnam County, Ohio. Their children:

1. Catherine - b.1821Luxemburg, Germany - d. March 18, 1905 in Arcadia, Ohio - Married John Boley in 1840, Tiffin, Ohio and had six children.

3. Nicholas - b. 1825 Luxemburg, Germany, d.-1913 - Married Clarisia Blair(b.January 14, 1832-d.-Oct.7, 1877). They had 4 children

Nicholas married second Johanna A.P. Leisenring(d-July 3, 1883) on July 13, 1879. Johanna had a daughter, Amelia.

Nicholas Married 3rd wife, Mary A. Gordon.

4. Noah - b. Luxemburg, Germany.

5. Francis - b.-Luxemburg, Germany, Married Theresa Lovinia Newmier.

6. John Nicholas - b.-March 17, 1934 Luxemburg, Germany, d-July 30, 1922, Tiffin, Ohio - Married Mary Elizabeth Newmier(b-1841-d-1928) in 1858. They had 14 children.

Is any of this any help? Do you have AnyThing previous to John and Catherine, I am mostly interested in Catherine.

I also have more info and MOST of the childrens names but did not list them. If you need them I will email them to you and more info if you are interested. I have LOTS of info, just not the info I personally want, i.e. Catherine.

My Great Great Grandmother was Katherine Etchen born 1860 in New Rigel,Senneca County, Ohio. She was married to a Matt Schelle. My understanding was that her father was John Nicolas Etchen born March 17, 1834. I have him as married to a Mary Neumyer november 4th 1858 in Tiffin Ohio.
Is this the same family?

I am curious as to where you found the ship name and register. I have John & Catherine arriving in 1838, Also my John and catherine never lived in Putnam County, although They had a son John N. Etchen who lived in putnam county but only for a short time, he eventually moved back to Seneca coutny and lived in Tiffin. He and his wife are buried in St. Josephs mausoleum in Tiffin, Ohio.

I totally disagree with this post, I have tried to contact needfulthings but all attempts have failed, I have John and Catherine Etchen,Etgen Etchey coming over on board the ship Baltimore in New york harbor June 25 1838 on this record they are listed as Etienne and all names match up to 1840 censusin Seneca county Ohio. Also I have never found any truth to the indian part. Also Catherine Married Joseph Boley not John, John was there son. Thomas Graham

There was a site (but I have lost its address) that showed the Etchey,Etchen and Etgen ancestors all the way back to the time they came from Luxenberg. If you know of this site could you email the address to me?

My Great Grandparents were Mathias or they called him Mathew Scheele b: 1855 and Catherine Etchen. b: 1862. They married in Seneca County but lived in Henry County and also Fulton County Ohio during the turn of the century. They had 8 Children . Albert, Eve, Sarah, Florence, Theresea, Marcella( my grandmother), Helen and Martin. I am interested in hearing from any decendents. I was under the assumption that John Peter was her father according to 1880 census. I'm new to geneology and am confused by all the Catherine's in the Etchen family. Also the surname changes. Etchen must be pronounced Etgen in German? So they just changed it to the way it sounded in English.
