Searching for descendants of John and Catherine "Etgen" (the way he spelled it )of Seneca and wyandot county ohio. John and Catherine are both buried in St. Bonniface Cem. in New Riegel, Ohio. John was born appr. 1795 and died in McCutchensville, Ohio on Nov 23, 1872. His wife died in McCutchensville, Ohio on Feb 23, 1873.
children:
Catherine b- 1821 d- 1905 in Arcadia, Ohio she was married to Joseph Boly in seneca county in 1840. Her Great grandson Charles V. Truax became a United states Congress man he is buried in Sycamore, Ohio.
Clara b- 1824 d- 1912 in Tiffin, Ohio she married George Gruble. they are both buried in New Riegel at st. Bonniface. They lived in McCutchensville, Ohio
Nicholas b- 1825 d- 1913 in Wauseon, Ohio he was married twice the first time was to Clarrissa Blair in 1851 in Defiance Co. Ohio and the second time to Joanna A. P. Leisenring 1879 also in Defiance Co. His Descendants Spell the name ETCHIE. he and both of his wives are buried in Sherwood, Ohio.
John Peter b- 1832 d- 1921 in Ft. Wayne, Indiana
he was also married twice the first time was to Susan Lauterburg (lauterbur) in 1857 in seneca Co. Ohio and the second time to Clara Brinkman (Nee Papenbrock) in 1879 in Glandorf, Putnam County, Ohio. His son peter also married a Clara Brinkman in Ottoville in 1884 [(his sister-in-law) research can be confusing here]. John Peter's descendants go by the spelling of Etgen and are centered around delphos, Ohio. His first wife is buried in Ottoville at St. Marys Cem. and John and his second wife are buried at St. Johns in Delphos, Ohio.
John Nicholas b- 1834 d- 1922 in Tiffin, Ohio at his home on s. Jefferson st. He was married in 1858 to Mary Newmeyer in Seneca Co. Ohio. His descendants spell the name Etchen. Soon after their marriage Mary's parents died
and they moved onto the Newmeyer place in Seneca township
Seneca county, Ohio and took care of the remaining children one of whom was lovina. (see 1860 seneca county census). john and his wife moved for a short time to Monterey township, Putnam Co. Ohio near his brother John Peter. they also had a short stint in Indiana but eventually moved back to Tiffin, Ohio. John and Mary are both interred in the st. Josephs
Mausoleum in Tiffin, Ohio. descendants center around delphos and Tiffin, Ohio
Francis born abt 1840 is the lost son. He is mentioned in his fathers will (probated in wyandot County) and his fathers estate packet contains a reciept concerning him from Ft. wayne, Indiana. The seneca county marriage records list a marriage for a Francis Etchen wed to Ludwina
Neumaier on Oct 20, 1862. I believe this is The lovina that his brother was carring for (his eventual sister in law) in th 1860 census. ??? did he live for a while in Defiance and then move on to Ft. Wayne. Are the Etchens in Washington state Descendants of his??? was he born in Seneca county.

There are three Etgen families that sprout out of seneca county, Ohio 1) John and Catherine 2) Frantz and Theresa Busbee 3) Nicholas and Jane Jungers. Could Frantz, John and Nicholas be brothers They all arrived in the 1830's frantz the first nicholas was the second and john was the third to arrive. In the 1840 Census there is an old women listed with nicolas and his family it is believed the her name was Margaret (Rosselette) Etgen and that she was Nicholas's mother can any one expand on this.
Nicholas also had descendants in Defiance County, ohio so research in Defiance can be tricky. In the history book for St. Bonniface Parish in New Riegel it states that nicholas etgen was from Toerniche, Lux. Belgium

any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hello Tom,
I have a bit of information Re: Etchens, of Seneca County, Ohio, dating back well into the 1800's. I don't recall too much on dates, but relationships are noted. My mother detailed this info in a notebook years ago...seems to have been somehow shirt-tail relatives to some of her ancestors. Will share what I have. Please e-mail me at: j_unger34@hotmail.com
Thank you. Sincerely, Jim Unger

Hello,

I just find your posts here in this board. I have some Information of my family back to 1786. But I didn't find the connection between your line and mine.

The name change much often in this time arround ethgen (ethgen, etgen, etchen, ETIENNE). The name was allways arround luxembourg.

Maybe someone knows more and can help me with http://www.mowgli.ch/geneweb/ethgen
