I know that the Etcheverry family of Cokeville Wyoming came from Mendive, Aguitaine France. This was in the Pyrenees mountains. I hope that helps you.

My name is Catherine Wilkinson and i too am searching the same area.
my grandfather is Pierre "Pete" Borderre who was born in Urepel.
i have someone helping me with his genealogy but i am curious about the area from where he comes from; also the name Etcheverry appears on a document - a marriage certificate from 1885. the couple was Catherine Borderre and Michel Etchart.
i hope these names mean something to you - i know this is a bit of a stretch, but i have been searching, re-searching this background for a long time. even have pictures.
i hope you can help me with some information, if not would like to hear what you have on the name (somehow i feel there maybe a connection).
thanks
cathy

Hi Catherine, my name is SKIP ETCHART,

This is just a brief note to assure you I am genuine and not some nut! If, after you read the following you wish to talk to me, my address is aetchy71@yahoo.com
My grandfather, Jean Etchart Jr. was born in Urepel, France
on May 19, 1877.
My Great grandparents were Jean Etchart and Gratianne Etchevers, they were born in Urepel, France and lived there most of their lives.
My grandfather's older brother was Mathieu Etchart, Mathieu married Catherine Borderre. It seems that Catherine had a son named Pierre Borderre and a daughter named Jeanette
Borderre. Pierre Borderre came though Ellis Island on January 8, 1906.
Pierre Borderre died in Bakersfield, Ca. on January 1, 1957. His wife at his death was Ethel Borderre, her father's name was Charle W. Brady, and her mother's name was Martha B. Wagley. Ethel was born in Texas. Ethel Borderre died in Bakersfield on August a, 1975.

I have more information if you want it, and We might be slightly related, therefore, wanna talk?

My great-great-grandfather Bernard Etcheverry came to California around 1852, I believe he was around 15 years old. He left Cambo les Bains, France in the Basque region Labourd, which I believe is in the foothills. His wife, Louisa Earle was also from France, but I'm not sure if she was basque or not. Her name certainly sounds english to me! But I haven't dug deeper into the tree to explore her family lines. Bernard's parents were Jean Etcheverry and Marie Ellissetche. I'd love to know more about them and the generations before them, but that may mean a trip to Europe is in order!

It's my understanding that the translation of the name Etcheverry means "new house." I have heard it (and the variants of it) are a very common french basque name. Without more factual knowledge to back up my theory, I assume it is common because it was given to the families that would move to a new town and settle somewhere new. I think I even read once that the houses, which get passed down in the family generation after generation are named by the family name. (I'd be interested to know if there is a tradition of passing the house to an oldest/youngest daughter/son.) So, instead of addresses with street name and numbers, they orient around the town by family name-must be an interesting job training for the post delivery people!

All the living descendants of Bernard and Louisa, that I am aware of, still live in California.
