Trying to find info on Etchells relatives. Very scarce around here and I'm having trouble going back beyond ggrandfather. His name was Robert, brother James. Mother or gmother was Mary. Robert's 2 sons were Enoch Albert, they lived Queen Street, Hurst, Ashton under Lyne, Lancashire County during mid-late 1880s. Robert married Sarah Mills. Came to USA, Middlesex County, Lowell,Massachusetts.Would love to hear anything some one may know on an Etchells. Thanks

Thanks Sue! Didn't know about George so I have a little more to go on. I looked up in 1851 census/Lancashire/Ashton. Only found ?chell listed or Eckles. Do you have any suggestions on how I might find out, father of Roberts, name? Thanks again for your help.

Hello Again Dawn,

You could estimate his Year of Birth from his stated age on the Census (1862). This is not absolutely accurate beacause he might have been actually 19 when the Census was taken or he could have been in his 19th Year.

You could then order a Copy of his Birth Certificate from the Family Records Centre:

1, Myddleton Street,

LONDON, EC1R 1UW

U.K.

Web Site: www.ons.gov.uk

Also you can order Copies of Birth, Marriages Death Certificates via e-mail:

certificate.service@ons.gov.uk

The Birth Cert.should give Parents Details and hopefully Fathers Occupation together with their Addresses.

Good Luck!

Sue

My Grandmother, Hannah Amillia Etchells was born on July 3, 1870 in Stalybridge, England (?). She married ( in Glosop Derby, England Dec 25, 1889) William Batty Delderfield who was born on Sept 14, 1869 in Aston, Lancashire, England. the family moved to Lowell MA about 1892 +/- and had eight children. Some born in England and some in Lowell. I do not have more info at present but think we my have a connection. You are correct, it's hard to find Etvhells info! Looking forward to hearing from you.

Great information Donald! I will look up the Delderfield name at the history center. Since I wrote the message you responded to I have discovered more. My ggrandfather, Robert had a sister Hannah, as well as, brothers George, James and William. Hannah was born in 1859, according to the 1871 census. She married a Turton in England, had some children in England and I think one in Lawrence, Ma. (next city over from Lowell). Would you know your Hannah's father's name? I have located the my Etchells line back to 1750. The generations were very large and I haven't found a long lost cousin yet but our connection in Lowell looks promising.

Dear Dawn:
I've come across the following additional info: GGrandfather Etchells married Harriet Hamilton. A grgrgrandmother was an Allen. I don't know what Grandmother Hannah Amelia Etchells' father's first name was at this time.

As for the Delderfields, My Grandfather William Batty Delderfield ( son of Charles) had brothers Fred, John, Christ(?)as well as sister Martha Bertha Delderfield. William took the middle name Batty from his mother, Sarah Batty as she was the second wife of Charles Delderfield who had approximately ten children form a previous marriage. Any help??

Hi Donald, I do have a little info for you. I checked marriage intentions for Lowell, William Delderfield, age 22 filed to marry Alice Oliver, age 23, on November 20, 1915. Another was Fred Delderfield, age 43 to Jennie Howarth. December 15, 1917. I checked the death records from 1900 to 1934 and didn't find any. They either moved away or none died in that time period.

I know by the women's names you gave me that we are not related directly but you could be related through the siblings of my direct line. There was only one other Etchells family that came to Lowell listed in the directories.
An interesting note on my line, through 4 generations none of the children were given middle names. Of course other siblings may have given them. Their wives may have insisted.

As I find more I'll let you know. Dawn

Hello Dawn,

I came across this posting in search of similar information. I always wondered about the town where my great-grandfather was from. I believe we are second cousins. My grandmother was Gladys (Etchells)and my great-grandfather was Albert Etchells and great-grandmother, Veronica (Murray) Etchells. I have reviewed all of your information thus far and would enjoy any additional information you have come across.

Thank you!
