I don't know if this will mean much to you, but my great grandfather, Warren Estey Chittenden, was probably named for Sarah Anne Estey's brother, whose obituary is listed here. Moses and Julia Estey are my great great great grandparents. I have been doing a lot of genealogy and discovered a few records on them in Lake County, Illinois. It has been fascinating following this family through the generations. I know that there are lots of living descendants of Mary and Isaac Estey. I am proud to be one of them.

Hi, Karin: Nothing really new but I'm also related. My grandma was Muriel Esty, daughter of Roger Esty and Florence Fuller of Danvers, Mass. Roger's father was Loren G. Esty, Loren's father was Jeremiah Augustus Esty of Middleton, Mass., and then there are an alternating bunch of Johns, Jonathans and Jeremiahs, if I recall (not remembering the whole sequence off the top of my head). The family used to own the Esty Tavern in Middleton, Mass. which I think still stands but not as a tavern. Eventually the line gets back to Mary Easty in Topsfield, and the Estys married into the Fuller family more than once. Other family names from marriages along the way are Lever, Tufts, Harnden, Monroe and a few others. My branch of the Estys stayed in Middleton/Danvers for quite a long time. I always admired Mary Easty, esp. after I read her very well-reasoned, but futile oral defense of herself at her "trial."

WARREN E. ESTY
APRIL 11, 1913

Warren E. Esty, a former resident and business man of Chatsworth, years ago, passed away at his home on Fargo Ave., Buffalo, N.Y., March 26, 1913, at the age of 80 years. He leaves his widow, one brother, George E. Esty, of Gray's Lake, Ill., two sisters: Mrs. Julia Schreiner, of Chicago and Mrs. Sarah Chittenden, of Grays Lake, Ill.
Mr. Esty came to Chatsworth from Gilman, Ill, in 1861, and entered the dry goods business with E.A. Bangs, in partner under the firm name of Esty & Bangs. Several years later he disposed of his interests to E. A. Bangs and brother. During his residence here he filled the offices of justice of the peace and school trustee. In 1874 he married Miss Hannah Kirby and removed to Chicago where he engaged in the florist business and about 1884 he went east and settle in Buffalo, where he had since resided.
Warren E. Esty was the fourth child of eight children of Moses and Julia (Goodrich) Esty and was born in Stoughton, Mass., October 4, 1853. He was of English ancestry and a direct descendant of Jeffery Esty, who came from Ipswich, England in the year 1636 and settled in Salem, Mass.
The funeral took place at Buffalo on March 28, 1913

Harvey is pictured in the 43-B class flight yearbook of Lubbock Army Air Field in Lubbock, Texas. He is a flight cadet. I'm not kin but thought this might help someone researching the family.

Thanks for the message! I have had the great fortune of getting in contact with some distant relatives because of my original posting! It amazes me just how many descendants are out there. I attended a Hart/Hartt family reunion a couple of years ago and it was interesting to meet all of these people. I was the only Estey descendant there though. The strangest thing has been getting emails from people saying they know who I am and who my parents are because we are on their family tree!

I was just looking up some of my own ancestry for fun, and then was surprised to find such an active Esty thread! My husband's name is Scott Esty, and the witch story has been a source of great amusement around our house for years. Did you see The Crucible? :-)

Scott's parents are Mary Lee and Ed Esty, who live in Washington D.C. We live in Portland OR.

Feel free to drop a line if you like - sounds like there's definitely some relation.

Mary Towne Esty/Estey is my 8th Great Grand Mother. I've been to her sister Rebecca Nurse's Homestead and graveyard. I've heard the stories too. I believe there is no positive answer to the question "Where is Mary buried?" Rebecca's family was said to have gone to Gallows Hill after dark and removed her body and buried it in an unmarked grave in the Nurse Graveyard. I hope this is true. I believe it is true.
In 1992, the remains of another executed victim, George Jacobs was buried in the Nurse Family Graveyard. His remains had been unearthed on the Jacob's property in the 1950's and stored. His new grave is marked with a nice headstone.
I hope Mary's family did what her sister's family and George Jacob's family did. I hope she too was taken away from Salem's Gallow's Hill from her shallow grave where she was disgracefully dumped and buried in a special place. A safe place. Perhaps John Estey, her son b.1662, showed his son Jonathan Estey b.1707(my 7th GGF), who may have showed his daughter Susannah (Estey) Berry b.1741, who might have been able to show her son Samuel Berry b.1761(my 5th GGF). I wish the stories had continued all the way to me...but they did not. I have visited Gallow's Hill too, just in case that is her gravesite.
On Sept. 22, each year I do think of what Mary must have been like. The hard life and terrible death. It reminds me of why I love genealogy.
I'd love to know anything about her family that people have sources for. If you would like to share, please respond.

Several "distant" relatives, via this board, have sent me literature helping me with the lineage. If I calculate it right, I believe I am the 8th great granddaughter to Isaac and Mary as well. I was invited to attend a Hart family reunion a few months back. The Hart's and Esty's married through the generations.

My gg grandmother was Elizabeth Irene Esty and she married Lewis Haight on 22 Nov 1859 in Spring Prairie, WI. Her father was Elija Esty. She was b. 10 Feb 1835 on MA. I was always told that we were related to Mary Towne Esty. Alicon, do your records indicate this? I would appreciate a copy of the info on the Esty family that you have. It might help me in tracking ,y family. This is all of the info I have on the Esty family. Thank you.

I couldn't find Elizabeth Irene, but I think I found her father Elijah Russell Estee (another spelling variation) born February 12, 1821 in Southborough Worcester Co., MA. He died after 1880. If he's Elizabeth's father, then Mary Towne was Elizabeth's 5ggrandmother. yell if you think I've got the right Esty and I'll send you the rest of the stuff I've got.

Cora Harlow was the third wife of William Henry Estey born about 1846. They were married 5 Mar. 1884 and had the following children: Burnes V., Eldbridge R., Harry W., Ivy M., and Leta N. Estey. Cora and William were married at the home of Jonas P. Harlow by Amos W. Bower, M.G. Witnesses were S.P. Severance and Mrs. Julia Severance.
William's parents were Ebenezer Estey and Ann Woodworth. His other wives were: Estilla Nash and Alice Woodsworth. This data should be confirmed with primary data such as birth and marriage records. Cora's wedding took place in Multnomah, Oregon. I am the Associate Genealogist associated with the Town Family Association, Inc.

I am searching for information on my GG-Grandfather, Elijah Esty. Elijah was born in Kingston, Vermont in 1801. He married Mary Ripley (date of marriage unknown). Mary and Elijah had nine children (Curtis B., Margaret Mary, Ruhama J., Franklin, Hiram Spaulding, Sarah, Dinah Emily, Horace, and Asenath). We have no date or place of death for Elijah or Mary. Sybley Emanuel Esty born circa 1897

I am trying to find out information about Sybley emanuel Esty Jnr born in Panama Cube around 1897. He emigrated to St Mary, Jamaica with his parents where he grew up. I have some information on some earlier generations of Estys' that I obtained from R Harris (in Edina MN) that dates from 1592 to 1712 England if anyone is interested.

From rumors the Esty's originate from Scotland but have a long historical background of living in England, most likely Suffolk and Essex County (just outside of London). Look up Jeffereys Estey, the earliest record I could find would date to 1521 on this web-site.

If you have any more info that would be great. I'm try to track down the parents of a Charles Esty who died in Rusk Co, Wisconsin around 1930. He died early (around age of 22) from a gas-wood-stove accident and no one knows much info about him.

Looking for the parents of Joseph F. A.ESTY (b: abt 1863). Joseph's marriage records list Joseph's father as Jonathan ESTY and mother as Mary NICHOLS and his birth place as NY but various towns were listed. So far he has only been found in Massachusetts starting in 1870 when he was living with his mother Mary ESTY in Methuen, MA. He used various birth towns but most were in NY.
Joseph F. A. ESTY was married to 3 women.
1) Theresa DEMPSEY (m. 1887 in Methuen, MA)
2) Kathleen Kent (m. abt 1895 in Stoneham, MA) and 3) He used the assumed name of Joseph F. A BLAIR during this relationship.
3) Nellie Welch (m. 1917 in Cambridge, MA).
He fathered 4 children with Theresa DEMPSEY and 3 with Kathleen KENT

I have in my possession an article from the Boston Herald (no date, but bef. 1860) about a Mrs. Elizabeth Esty on Jay Street, considerablly advanced in life and having money and securities in her home representing between $5,000 and $6,000.00. She had misplaced the money, called authorities, but then remembered where she had hid the cash. I believe she is a distant ancester of mine. Possibly thru the Wells or Kimble lines. They lived on the Roxbury Rd. in Mexico,Me
I have been told , they run a small store on a corner of one of the streets on the Roxbury Rd, near where they lived
This was more than 50 yrs ago I would guess
I know he is buried in the Farrington / Morton Cemteary
in Mexico, but I don't know when. Or where Myrtle is buried

Mary Esty was my 9th great grandmother, she was married to Isaac who was born in 1627 in Preston, England and died in 1692 in Topsfield, Mass. There are websites all over the place about the Towne sisters (Mary's maiden name), there were three, Mary, Sarah and Rebecca. I hope this little bit helps, if it does I have the line all the way down to my great grandmother if you need it.

First known Esty

Jeffrey Esty (Estey, Estye, etc.) born about 1515, England, died 1592/3. Will dated 6 Dec 1592, proved 12 Oct 1593 at Hintlesham, Suffolk Co, England. Resided Hintlesham, County Suffolk, England, He was a husbandman; his name is recorded on the subsidy List of Suffolk County, one of those taxed at Hintleshamin 1568, his will was recorded at the Consistory Court of Norwich, England in which he mentions his seven sons and "young Jeffrey, the son of his son Christopher. Sons: John, Edmund, William, Thomas, Richard, Jefferye, and Christopher. Note it is the young Jeffrey above that traveled to America, before 1636, with his own son Isaac, a boy. I have visited Hintlesham several times and will again on Oct 1st this year.
