I start with MARTHA ESCOTT, born 1771, having a baby 6 Oct 1793, named Charles, but not naming the father. Address Painswick, Gloucester. Charles married twice and on the second marriage certificate it gives his father as Thomas Estcourt, soldier. MY COUSIN HAS A COPY OF THIS cERT. Will try to get a copy.

Also a photocopy copy of the church records of the birth of his oldest child, with Charles Southeron Estcourt as his name. Very blurry and squashed up, so a bit doubtful.

This Charles had 9 children, the youngest being George
James, born 1835, Painswick. He married in 1854, and emigrated to New Zealand, where he died in 1856, leaving wife with 2 babies, no home and large Drs bills. My great
great grandparents.

Hi.

I'll be keeping a close eye on this - I'd a direct descendent of Estcourts in Painswick, and although I've seen a lot of family trees which makes assumptions about who married whom, I've never seen very much evidence.

My oldest relative I can trace for certain is Daniel Estcourt, born around 1720-1724. Some trees relate him to Charles and Mary (Martha), but I've never seen the proof. I gather there was more than one Estcourt family in the Stroud Valley, and although I was always told that my family were related to the Estcourts of Shipton Moyne, again, I can't see the connection with what I have.

Neverthless, it's always good to see other people interested in the Painswick Estcourts. Feel free to go through my family tree - I'll happily compare notes with anyone.

Regards.

Richey Estcourt b.1977

Problem is he did not marry mother Martha Escott,of Painswick, but someone put his name on Charles' marriage cert. This Thomas was a soldier.

Yes I am still online. Beatrice Kathleen Howitt was my Grand Aunt. She was the daughter of Thomas Howitt and Susan Catherine Holliday, my great grandparents. Harry Joseph Howitt (my grandfather) was brother to Beatrice Kathleen Howitt. If I have it right that would make you my 2nd cousin. So Hi Cousin. So to get this right I have Sidney and Beatrice as having three children, all, I am told kept the Howitt name in their names somewhere. So I have Basil Howitt Estcourt born 1 Jul 1895 in Cape Colony South Africa and he married Grace Parkinson on 26 Jul 1921. I have nothing on Grace. I have nothing on their children. Would this be your grandfather? in which case I have not got the correct info on him. Sidney & Beatrice also had Gerald Dawson Howitt Esctourt born 20th April 1902 in Newport Pagnell District, Buckinghamshire, England and Kathleen Beatrice Estcourt born 15 Jan 1904 in the Newport Pagnell District also. she died on 4 Sep 1968 she married Vicomte Jules Francois Rene Barrois De Sarigne on 27 July 1927 in Staines District Middlesex. I would love to hear the correct info on your side of the family perhaps you could email me on sheila@fairlines.org.uk,

Best wishes
Sheila Best nee Howitt

Hi Sheila Howitt. I hope after 5 years you are still on line! I am an Estcourt, great-grand-daughter of Sidney Estcourt (b.1858)married to KB Howitt. SBH Estcourt was my grandfather (one of Sidney's son) and Laurence Basil Sotheron Estcourt was my father (son of SBH Estcourt)so we are definitely related!!I live in Cape Town, South Africa, born in Zambia in 1958. Would love to hear where you fit into the tree. Trying to get info re William Lloyd Metzner (great, great, great grandfather) who we understand, whether true or not, to be the "product" of King George III and someone called Grandma Miles (grand-daughter of the Duke of Partarlington, Ireland. Grandma Miles married Miles Metzner (??).

Rosemary Wikstrom (nee Estcourt)

I've found out a little bit about him - if you have a look through my family tree, there's some details about his addresses. I understand from other users here that he died in a workhouse in Suffolk, but I don't have the documentary proof of that.

The interesting this is that he seems to have been part of a split in the family. He was one of several brothers, all the in construction game. He and one of his brothers moved to London for a life of obscurity, with John Elijah seeming to live in penury. From census records, it seems that his wife worked until fairly late in life, while John Elijah's bhad no work. At some point after she died, he went off to the workhouse. His son, Robert Hobbs, killed himself in middle-age after losing his job in a bakery. From there on, there's more anectodal detail as his ancestors are still alive, and Deborah Estcourt is a contributor to these forums.

By contrast, his brothers Oliver and Albert gained fortune and reknown through their work. Legend has it they both contributed to the rebuilt Houses of Parliament and Albert Memorial. They established family lines of high-ranking miltary officers, and the late mountaineer Nick Estcourt, who perished on K2 in 1978.

Quite why these brothers found so contrastingly different fortunes is something that I suppose we'll never know.

Andy - what is your branch of the family?

The roots of my family tree are in Painswick, where it seems that Estcourt was not an uncommon name.

I was wondering if anyone else had a particular interest in these families, and was able to shed light on a few queries:

1. Is there any reliable source for the parentage of Daniel Estcourt b.1724 in Painswick?

2. Did his son Thomas b.1750 marry twice, or have a son called Charles b.1793?

Any information about these people would be warmly received.

Many thanks.

Richey Estcourt

I'd really like to know more about this man. He is my great-great grandfather, and some time between 1851 and 1871 (where I'm having difficulty finding records), he moved to from Painswick in Gloucester to the Tottenham area. He worked as a stone mason for his entire working life.

I'd be interested to know why he moved. Was there a family link to other Estcourts in the North London area? I can't seem to find where he died, either....

Any information would be great. Many thanks.

Hi
I a new to this site, ut have been trying to trace my fathers ancestory. His Grandfather was Robert Hobbs Estcourt and although I know a bit, would like to kow much more. I see from the threads that you have some knowledge of the Estcourts. Robert Hobbs was rom Painswick and Married Anniw Fuller ( My dads nan - she brought my dad up). I know of their children and that John Elijah Estcourt was Roberts' father and he had a brother James. They were stonemasons at one time. I would like to find out more and also whether Richard Estcourt Actor and Playwrite of the 1700-1800's was related in any way. There seems to be many more Estcourts than I originally thought and I would be interested to know which are my direct ancestors an which maybe cousins or removed. The family seems to have originated in Gloucester although the children of Annie Fuller and Robert Hobbs were from Islington/Hackney. Any info would be great.
Thanks.

Hi Jannyintn

Oh Yes.... I emailed Len privately and he emailed me back this morning. I come from Beatrice Kathleen Howitt (Sidney's wife) side of the family. She was my grandaunt. Apparently I am the first from her side to make contact. He has been so helpful already.

Thank you and I will keep you posted.

Sheila

Oh, you are going to be SO happy! Do you see the other post in this thread; the one from Len Metzner? Well it is your lucky day, because he knows a great deal about the Estcourts as a sideline to his research on the Metzners. (Your Sidney's mother was a Metzner.) Email him and tell him "Janet sent you." There is a mystery at the heart of the Metzers we have been working to solve. Me for a couple of years, Len for many more. Maybe you will be the one to help bring the final piece of the puzzle to light! Keep me posted! Janet

Hi

I saw your posting and I am wondering if it includes my Sidney Estcourt born 1858 (Q4 Hackney Middlesex Greater London v: 1b p: 328) and married Beatrice Kathleen Howitt in 1894. He was in the 1901 census and it mentioned he came from Dalston London.

Would this be your Sidney? And if so do you have more information on him and his family that you can share with me?

Kind regards
Sheila Best
(nee Howitt)
They also had a daughter, Margaret Emily Lomas(b. 1875 Plumstead, Kent), who married someone whos last name was Kidd, and had a daughter, Marjorie Emily Kidd.

Emily Caroline Estcourt had a sister called Charlotte Ellen, who married Henry Frederick Clarke in 1894, they had a daughter called Dorothy Ellen (or Ellen Dorothy) Clarke.

Emily and Charlottes parents were James Estcourt (b. 11.9.1826) and Eliza (I think her maiden name was Baxfield, but I'm not sure of this.)

I know a bit more, but I'm not entirely certain its correct.
Please reply, it would be nice to compare trees.
