Hi - I noticed your post and as I am working on a piece about the Essens in Cape May, I thought I would answer what I could.

William and Caroline Essen's son was William G. Not B as mistated in the census. The Essens moved to Cape May in 1872 and William the father, opened a bakery that same year. It is STILL a bakery and one of the oldest continually operating bakeries in the country.

William G. married Tryphene Crowell of Cape May Point in 1882. They had two children, John Richling, who died in infancy and Willis. Willis graduated from the School of Civil Engineering at the University of Pennsylvania in 1906. The following year he was accidently killed when he stepped in front of a passenger express train. He was 22. I was not aware that he had children.

William G took over the bakery in 1895 from his father. His father William, died in 1900 followed by his second wife, Caroline in 1904.

William senior built a house at 26 Ocean Street (Now Columbia House Inn) in 1884. Columbia House is a bed and breakfast in Cape May.

William G died at 26 Ocean Street at 81 in 1938. His wife Tryphene died there in 1946.

I know there are Essen descendents in Maryland now. Are you sure you are descended from William G or are you linked to one of his sisters?

Hope this helps. Craig

Hi Sonja - I am writing a column for Exit Zero Newspaper in Cape May. www.ExitZero.us

The Essen family historian would be Jim Campbell, who can be reached through the Cape May Historical Society in Cape May itself. This is not the county group, it is the local group in the city in the old Colonial House in Cape May.

Jim has done a vast amount of research on the subject and written a few articles. Wally Sheats is an Essen descendent, still living. Sue Leaming, now deceased, was also a close friend of Tryphene and gave Jim a lot of personal history of the family. It may behoove you to contact him. I do not want to post his phone number here, call the Cape May Historical Society for that.

Regards, Craig

Hello Again, Craig,
I saw the Exit Zero Newspaper for the first time the week before Labor Day Weekend.
I am familiar with the small historical house you are referring to, although I am not a member of the CM Historical Society in CM City. My husband knew Sue Leaming and her husband, Harry well. We are good friends with one of their sons and daughters-in-law. I knew from Sue's daughter-in-law that Sue was really into genealogy.
I'm not sure what I could add about the Crowell family. It's a shame my mother-in-law is no longer here to pass on any information. She knew many of the old families, long gone, in and around the CM area. She passed away in 1998. She is the one who got me started on doing her ancestral genealogy.
I only wish, many times, that my genealogical interest had been on-going when my husband's maternal grandmother was still alive. She was a treasure trove of information.
I will keep the information you have passed onto me. Thank you again for your response.

Hello Craig,
Thank you for all the info. on the Essen family and also for straightening out the "middle initial" problem for William G. Essen. I did have William G. in my records, but having seen the B. & the J. in other sources, made it confusing.
To answer your question about our connection to the Essen family, "No, my husband is not a direct line of the Essens". He is related to Tryphena P. Crowell, William G. Essen's wife. Tryphena's sister, Anna Foster Crowell is his direct line, Tryphena P. Crowell was his Great Grand Aunt.
My mother-in-law, now deceased, knew the family well, as Tryphena P. & William G. Essen were her Grand Aunt & Grand Uncle. She spent many years visiting with them in their home, the one you mentioned on Ocean St., which is now the Columbia House B&B. I am familiar with the bakery you spoke of, having purchased baked goods from this store through the years. The Essens sold the bakery to the Kokes (long since retired and probably deceased), which is when I use to buy baked goods from this store and still do on occasion from the present owners.
I have a middle initial for Willis as G., but a picture of him shows that his middle name was Lilburn. He was a handsome young man. What a tragedy. My mother-in-law told me that he had died, but she never elaborated on how it happened. Thank you for filling me in on the accident.
William G. Essen's wife, Tryphena P. Crowell was born April 15, 1864 in Fishing Creek, Cape May County, NJ, if you need this for your article. Are you related to one of the Essen children or just writing an article for the CMGHS magazine or PA Historical Society magazine? Again, thank you for the info. you have given me. Hopefully, your article will be in the future issue of the CMGHS magazine. I would like to read it.

ESSEN's of Germany, PA & NJ

Would like more information on WILLIAM ESSEN, b. in Germany abt. 1825. His wife was CAROLINE (maiden name unknown) b.in Scotland abt. 1839. Children of this union, all born in PA were: 1. CLARA ESSEN, b. abt. 1856; 2. WILLIAM B. (Middle initial has also been seen as J & G; I am not sure that they are the one and the same person, and that they are connected with this family. This is my problem) ESSEN, b. abt. 1857; 3. EDITH ESSEN, b. abt. 1865; BERTINIA ESSEN, b. abt. 1865; & DELLA ESSEN, b. abt. 1868. WILLIAM ESSEN, at some point in his life, moved his family to Cape May County, NJ. He was a baker, his bakery being on Washington Street in the City of Cape May; and they also lived in the City of Cape May. His daughter, CLARA was a Confectioner, and WILLIAM B., his son, was a Book Keeper; this was according to an 1880 Cape May Co., NJ Census Record. Both WILLIAM & CAROLINE ESSEN are buried in the Cold Spring Cemetery, Cold Spring, Cape May Co., NJ.

I am trying to see if WILLIAM B. ESSEN, mentioned above, is the same WILLIAM J. or WILLIAM G. ESSEN (I believe it should be the letter "G") that is in our line. Their birthdate years are similar on all three. The spouse of WILLIAM J. or G. ESSEN, b. abt 1856 is TRYPHENA (CROWELL) ESSEN, b. in NJ abt. 1865. Any connection to this ESSEN line, who could straighten these three William's initials out for me?

There are still some decendent's of the Essen Family here in Alberta, around Edmonton, an I believe out toward's the Sask, border. I can dig deeper to find more info. The Essen came into my part of the Family as MY Great Aunt, Married a Essen, her son's both died very young, the first in the 1920,s less than 2 yr's, the second was taken during WW2 2 Killed in action, a Victor Essen, an his history is detailed on those who died in WW2.
