My great grandfather was born sometime around 1858. He was described as a black man with dark skin and jet black hair which was straight, about 5.5 tall in height. After many times checking on ancestry, he was mostly a laborer, and I think he may have run a bar. In the Indianapolis City Directory is where I first find him living there with his wife Martha Cassie Coe Raspberry, in 1896 I think it was, and he was listed as William Raspberry, sometimes listed as William Green Raspberry.. I found him in 1900 in the Indianapolis census and he says he was born in Virginia, but in 1910 he says he is born in West Virginia, so I think that means he has found more info by 1910 apparently. We don't know of a mother, father, sister, or brother, not even an aunt or uncle!!!! But in 1914 he and Cassie get a divorce. In 1916, in August of that year, Cassie gets remarried, and William dies in September. Family says on his death bed, he says his real name is Esselman, but I have 2 problems with that, for one, there was NO ONE there at the hospital when he died, I checked, and the other, I cannot find a connect for Esselman anywhere. My dna once showed Raspberry though. Raspberry is also called "Framboise". Still trying to check that out. According to family, (hope it's not folklore) he told family members that he came over on a ship when he was quite young, but before slavery had ended and that he remembered the voyage. So we thought he could be German and Cuban or something along those lines. So then why does he say he is born in Virginia? That is another big question...I would sure appreciate any help I can get. Looking for family.......
