I can tell you the connection between Saint Domingue (now Haiti) and Cuba for MY particular ESNARD's. (If it is the same for anyone out there--please write me!!!) My ancestor Jean Pierre Esnard was born in Angouleme/Angoumois, France, about 1766 but came to Saint Domingue with his family at some point afterwards. They were large plantation owners by 1784. When the insurrection happened, his parents and brother were killed, but he managed to escape with his wife. Many plantation owners escaped to Cuba because of the closeness to SD, but I believe my ancestors initially came to the states. After hearing about the great similarities in climate in Cuba, for growing the sugar and coffee crops they had grown in SD, my ancestor did go to Cuba and start all over. He died in Cuba about 1850, leaving two sons there--Jean/John/Juan and Charles Vincent Pebarte/Pebert ESNARD. These sons married and had children, but I don't know any of their history--except that there are many ESNARD's out there that MUST be related via these sons!!
