My Great Grandmother was Augusta Rothoff (b:May 25, 1862), she immigrated to the United States with her sister Anna in 1884. Could this possibly be the same Augusta and Anna you mentioned in your message?
I haven't been able to find much information on the Rothoff side of the family. If there is connection here, I would appreciate any information that you may have.
Thanks,
Lorraine

Thanks Rich, I was already aware of William, but can't find much about his family. I do have a note in my research that indicates an indenture from William Esher to George Esher (Sept. 29, 1832) but it looks like he might have been William's son (brother to Eliza Esher) and not brother.
I wonder if it's difficult doing research on this name because the spelling has changed?
Cynthia

Hi,

I have traced the Esher/Escher name back to 1730. George Esher is the son of Johann Conrad Escher and Anna Maria Feliticus. Johann was born in Esslingen, Germany. He sailed on the ship, Rhein and arrived in Phila, PA on 9/15/1765. I may have some information on the Shuster's but I am not sure.

My e-mail is RCLCBrown@aol.com

I do have a lot of information that you may find interesting. I was under the impression for a long time that I was directly related to George Esher. It turns out that I am related to his brother Conrad. Anyway, I will be happy to copy and mail anything that I have that would assist you. It may take a while because I have hundreds of pages of information.

I have been to Germantown. It is about 10 miles north of Center City Phila. Spring Hill is a small town somewhere outside of Phila. The only Chestnut Street that I know is in Center City Phila. It is one block away from City Hall.

Regards,

Rich

hello folks,
am new at this but curious about my father's roots. His name was edgar esher huff and we always wondered where 'esher' came from ! He actually met a man with the exact name in trenton , N.J. about 15 yrs ago. My dad is in Heaven now so can't ask him all those ?'s I am ready to wonder about!
He was born in Germantown, Pa. on N. Gratz St. I believe in 1908. His dad died when he was 9 from internal injuries sustained when 'cranking' someones model T for them. His mother was Lillian Margaret McCormick who I believe had a brother, John. We have a saber marked John Lawerence Huff from the civil war. That is also the name of one of my brothers.
We always wondered about 'esher' and it sounds like it is a 'town' name from England. Please contact me if youhave any info to help us out! Thanx. Libby (Huff) Dreisbach

I am in search of any information on the Esher family. My gr-gr-gr-gr-gr grandfather was George Esher. He was born in the Germantown section of Phila in 1766. I do not know who is mother is. I know that his father is Johan Conrad Escher, who immigrated to Phila in 1765. I have found George's grave. He married Sarah Shuster on Nov. 11, 1791 and they had a son William born in 1793. I know that Sarah was born about 1767 in Germantown, Phila. There are only two male Shuster's listed in the archives as being residents in Germantown at the time of her birth. They appear to be brothers. Any help would be appreciated.

Elizabeth Esher

Hello Cynthia,
I have not seen the Hubbs name in any of my research on the Esher's. I have found one Elizabeth Esher in the 1830 Census. She would have been born around 1760-1770. I do know this about the Esher's which may help you.
Johann Conrad Escher sailed from Rotterdam on the Ship Chance and arrived in Phila in Sept. 1765. He remained in Phila. Johan Jacob Escher and Gabriel Esher (notice the different spelling in name) sailed on the same ship to Phila in 1768. I have copies of the passenger lists with all info. You must be a decendent of either Jacob or Gabriel. I know that Gabriel is listed in the 1810 Census as a resident of Hagerstown, MD. There is a Jacob U. Esher who is listed as fighting in the Battle of Gettysburg and is listed as living in MD.
I have not researched Johan Jacob Escher.
I do know that Johann Conrad Escher had three sons: George, William and Conrad. I have only traced George since he is my direct decendent. I do however, have many copies of the Census of 1810 and 1820. I will look to see if any of them have a daugher who is the age of Elizabeth and pass it along to you.
If you wish to contact me directly my e-mail address is: RCBtravel1@aol.com

Hello Gloria,
Thank you for your response. I do appreciate it. Your info on the Esher's could be very accurate. I have been told that George Esher (1766-1855) had brothers named William, Conrad and Jacob. I have found numerous generations where children where named after their parents and grandparents. I am glad you told me about the Wills of William and Jacob. Do you know the approximate years of their deaths? I can go to Phila and review their wills and pass on information to you. If you review the Wills I would greatly appreciate it if you could provide me with the information.
As far as the Indian research I can only tell you this. My grandmother is 90 years old and always said that her father, Joseph Esher(1884-1955) said that "you can find the Esher's on the top of a totempole." Her sister, Francis Esher Williams is 84 and remembers the same story but no one has been able to prove it. This would be an interesting story to prove.
Hello Gloria,
Thanks for the info on the Esher Wills. Please let me know what you find and where you find it.
I have seen several photos of Esher's. The noses are always prominent. I always believed that the cheekbones were high too. I don't have a clue as to which tribe that we might belong. I have only heard it as a "maybe" story.

Thanks,
Rich

Hi Cynthia,
I was researching the Esher's under the website, FamilySearch.com and found Eliza Esher's birth and marriage record. She is the daughter of William Esher. William is probably the brother of George, who faught in the American Revolution. George and William would be the son's of Johann Conrad Escher, who immigrated to America in 1765. I am in the process of tracing the Escher's back to the 1660s in Germany.
Have a great weekend!!

Rich

Hello Gloria,
I am VERY interested in the second Will. This William Esher was married to Jane Chapman in Nov. 1820, who died May 6 1855. She is supposed to be buried in Germantown. I reconize all of their children's names. I would really like to have a copy of it if you could send it to me. My address is:
Rich Brown
257 Layfette Drive
Swedesboro, NJ 08085

Also, I have received a photocopy of a letter dated May 8, 1927. It is written by an Esher decendent and provides a lot of info on the ancestry dating back to the American Revolution. If you would like to have a copy send me a fax number or address and I will forward it to you.

Hi Carol,
My great grandfather is Joseph Council Esher who is the brother of Margaret Esher Waller. The Delaware Indians were also known as the Lenni Lenape Indians. I have a tremendous amount of information on the Esher line if you are interested.
I am slowly discovering that we are not directly related to George Esher, who was a drummer boy in the American Revolution. I truly believe that we are desendents of his brother Conrad.
If you wish to contact me directly I can be reached at RCBtravel1@aol.com

Thanks!
Rich

I'll have to check for this Will at City Hall.

There was not too much information in the file.

He had 5 children:

Harriet Fireing ?

Hannah Zetia Davis

John W. Esher

Elizabeth W. Davis

Henry D. Esher

Executors: John P. Fireing and Elizabeth W. Esher

Rich -

That is interesting about the Leni Lenape Indians being named as the tribe. When I read it I had a "flash" of my grandmother mentioning that tribe and my connecting it with the Leni Lenape Park where we used to go for picnics when I was a child. Memory? False memory? I can't say but it is intriguing.

Regards,

Gloria

William Esher's Will

Hi Rich and Cynthia -

Just got a look at this Will today. Looks like pay dirt! It is #299 of 1858. It's falling apart but I was able to get some information from it. I've requested a copy and will forward the same to you if you'll send your address to my email. His wife is Mary B. Esher and she is the beneficiary. In the Will he also mentions "my friend Robert Wood Solly" and makes him one of his executors. I do find it interesting that he does not call him his son-in-law. His principal asset was a farm in the 24th Ward of about 100 acres valued at $2,600 in 1858. This property was located at 60th and Haverford. The appraisers were John Birch and Joseph Cook. That Birch name keeps cropping up in my Solly family tree. It makes me wonder if Mary's maiden name was Birch.

The second William Esher Will I reviewed is #595 of 1871. His occupation is listed as "gentleman." Names mentioned in the Will are: daughters Mary A. Pearson, Jane C. Heyl, Caroline C. Harris and Margaret C. Delk. Also mentioned is Robert E. Heyl his grandson. This second Will does not contain any familiar names to me. How about you guys?

-Gloria
glo777@home.com

Hi Rich -

I expect to view these wills within the week and I'll certainly share my findings. William's Will is from 1858 and Jacob's from 1861.

It's good to hear that you have the Indian legend on your side of the family tree as well. Do you have any idea what tribe this would be? My father "thinks" it may be Iroquois, but my grandmother who knew for sure is long gone, God bless her. I've been having an off-list conversation with Cynthia (who is my 2nd cousin twice removed) about Indian features and have shared a couple of scans with her. It seems the Indian "nose" is the most prominant feature. Is there a clearly Indian appearance visible in your family?

The focus of my Esher research has been on Eliza Esher. I believe she was the daughter of a William Esher and she may have had a brother or another male relative by the name of Jacob. Both William and Jacob left Wills in Philadelphia and I hope to prove this relationship when I review them. Family legend says that William Esher was 1/2 American Indian. Do you have any information on an Indian Esher line?
