Erway Family

Jay,

I read your post with great interest. I am a descendant of Conrad Erway and of the line that migrated across country to the gold and silver mining towns around Virginia City, NV, and eventually to California. My Grandmother, Ada May Erway, was born in Chino, CA and lived much of her life in Lompoc, CA. I just wrote a lengthy message that somehow evaporated when I hit the back button, so here is the second, somewhat abbreviated version. I have the whole line from Conrad and Juliana to myself on Ancestor Charts but not in computer files at this point. I'll sketch some of what I know for general consumption and can mail you the rest.

I have some information suggesting that Erway was originally Erbe (a German name) and am searching for their original location in Germany. I've been to Knowlton Township and the Stillwater area a couple of times. Interesting plots with Saberkuls, Wintermuthes, Snovers, and Schnaubers buried in close proximity (some of these families may have been kin to the Erways) I believe the Erways were wagoners in this area. They certainly were by the time they arrived in Nevada and California. There were copper mines near Knowlton Township in the late 1700s and an Old Mine Road that ran from the mines to Kingston, NY on the Hudson--a distance of 110 miles. There is an interesting large map on the wall of the Best Western motel in Stroudsburg, PA (I spent one night there just by chance and took phots of it) that portrays much of the early history of the area and shows the location of the mines and the road. Since man of the women who married into the Erway Family were from towns and counties (Stillwater as well as Montgomery, Walkill, and Rhinebeck NY) along or near this road, I suspect that the Erway's were hauling ore or freight on this route. They moved from this area to Ithaca, NY; then to Three Rivers, MI; Plattsmouth NB where my ggg gmo is buried; Elko Nv; Yerington, NV; Santa Rosa, CA; and eventually to Southern and Central California. They made the trip across the plains to Nevada at least a couple of times, encountering Indians and other hardships along the way. There is some documentation of this in a short history of the life of Mark Reed Erway produced by the California Daughters of the Golden West, I believe. I have it around here somewhere.

The Erways had a contract to haul mail between the mining towns around Virginia City, NV. Albert Sr. and his daughter-in-law, Emily Weigandt from Baden, Germany, are buried in Yerington, NV, which is where the family lived. Albert's son, James (older brother of Mark Reed), finally came west and is buried in Santa Maria, CA. His son, Albert Hartsif Erway, married my g gmo, Lillie Bray, in Los Olivos, CA. Albert was a wagoner who worked in Southern California and the Mojave Desert. He died at the age of 25 and Lillie married another wagoner, Eugene Modie, who I knew as my g gfa.

I can mail you the ancestor charts for this line, along with the pioneer history, if you like. I'm interested in family lines of any of the women who married into the Erway line if you have such information. Perhaps I'll just wait to see what is posted on the Erway Web site. Just two more questions. What is the Fron at the end of Juliana Saberkul's name? Also, do you have a direct tie to the Erways? Hoping to hear from you.
