Morning Roger

It is a strange coincidence but I am confident that MY Nora was born in the 30's . Maybe mother and daughter ??? The only other thing I have to go on is an address in Bolton in the 1950's. However just in case what else do you have to go on. ??

Regards

GLYN

Hi Glyn,
I had completely forgotten about this post seeing that I placed it back in 2002.
Did you have any luck. I'm not sure whether my Nora and yours are the same person due to the year you mention. My Nora was born 1918. I do find it curious that 2 people bearing the same name worked in the same industry and this only makes me think they ARE one and the same.
Apart from the message boards is there any other way I can contact you.
Roger

according to the net , the crest of a dexter arm , armored, holding a saracen's head erased is the crest of John Entwisle Esq of Foxholes. this elkington SP fork dates per hallmarks to 1848. I research antiques . Elkington pioneered silverplating early in England. Is anyone on this blog related to this John Entwisle of Foxholes Eng and do you know of this crest? thank you.
g o v a u d i a t m A C . C O M

Thankyou for this Dot. Yes, I thought Manchester Public Library would be a good place to start. I do not have a Family HIstory Computer Program but our Entwistles are to be found on the Parkes/Marshall of Egypt Farm family tree. (My grandmother Gertrude Parkes married John Thomas Entwistle, nephew of James Greenwood Entwistle. This James b.1859 in Streetsville near Toronto I believe was the son of Richard Entwistle, youngest of 23 children, from England. They all worked on the railway.

The big mystery here is to solve how my great grandfather, John T. Entwistle (Jack Entwistle) died in his thirties. His wife was Ella McDiarmid and they had 3 young boys. Rumour has it that he was murdered in a train robbery near Chatham Ontario, or less dramatically, he may have died in a train accident or an accident in the train yard. But we haven't discovered yet and I was hoping that perhaps someone in James Greenwood Entwistle's family may know.

Sounds like you have done a lot of work but I am not sure we are talking about the same James G.

I look forward to hearing from you!

With thanks,

Kathy

PS: I have now learned from newspaper cuttings that he was murdered and left on a railway track in Owosso Michigan. At the time he was working on the railroad.

Hello Barbara,

James Greenwood Entwistle was my great uncle, brother of my great grandfather John T. Entwistle (Jack Entwistle) who died aged 35 (probably murdered) in Owosso Michigan in 1896 leaving his wife Ella and 3 young sons.

I am just learning about this side of our family. Do you have any links which might help me find out more? I am trying to trace the origin of the family in Britain but I am having difficulty locating Richard's father and mother James and Ann.

Many thanks,

Kathy de Witt

Sounds like the same. Richard was in Withnell, 1871, 81, 91 and 1901 census. Death was 7 Febr. 1902 in Withnellfold. Children, based on census are: Sarah Jane, Ellen, Alice, Thomas & Mary. Believe that Jane died 1889 in Chorley. Sound right?
My Grandmother was Housekeeper for a lady who owned Mrs. Twistles flour, I was quite young at the time so I think about 1943 or so. I remember visiting her more than once, when the lady was away, I remember the house, being shown the main bedroom, which had a tiger skin directly over the bed, with the head pointing down to the bed, looked vary scary for a young child. I also remember lovely gardens, particularly with roses, and the gardener sometimes cut some for me. The house was on Chapeltown Road, I lived in Bolton until 1970 and regularly visit. I thought this information could be of interest.

Regards Eva

parents of Robert Entwistle born around 1883

This is all the info I got from the 1895 St. Paul census
Robert Entwistle age 12 was living with Joseph and Sarah Entwistle who were both born in England. According to the census, Robert as well as Joseph and Sarah's children were born in Minnesota. This is the earliest census or any info I have on him. I have later census records and a draft registration record which gives different DOBs and places of birth. Robert said that he was orphaned and that his mother's name was Rose and he knew nothing about his father. He also said his mother was Irish. He died in the 1970's in Missouri.
I am trying to fill in some blanks here. My great-grandmother was Maud Entwistle. I have her listed on the 1900 census as the niece of Solomon and Melinda Bloomer (http://tinyurl.com/y52tzrd) and the 1910 census Solomon is listed as 'grandfather'. On the 1920 census, Edward Entwistle is listed as 'brother in law' to her husband Frank Murphy (http://tinyurl.com/y367zo4)

So-any ideas on who the parents of Maude and Edward were? Solomon Bloomer had a twin, Hiram but he seems to have died too soon to have fathered Maude.

It will take me a bit to locate the information. I have extracted all the ENTWISTLE entries in all the census returns from 1841 through 1891, all the parish registers I could find and any other document I could get my hands on, including the early BMD records. Also Burial records from the cemetaries, and wills.
My father Wilfred Hampson ENTWISTLE, was born in Rochdale and came to Canada in 1926. He was raised by his grandparents. I never met any of the family at all. I have been able to trace my branch of the family to Joseph ENTWISTLE & Phebe LEATHWOOD, abt 1777, d 1842. They had 12 children, and only one boy survived. He was my 3G grandad, and this branch of the family resided in Heywood. I have dead ended there. My brother has two boys, neither of which are married, so the line ends with him.
The problem we ENTWISTLEs all face is that there are so many of (us) in the area. It is a very localized name, originating in Lancashire. a "twistle" is a flat land around the junction of several rivers or creeks. the "Ens" refers to the water birds that inhabited the area. In other words, we are the "People who lived on the banks of the creek"! :o)
If you are going to Lancs to do some research, you will find the Manchester Central Library to be a great source of filmed parish and diocese records. The official record repository is Preston.
I know that I have the line of James Greenwood ENTWISTLE. It appears he came to US with a group of people, all weavers and cotton workers, to establish the cotton manufacturing industry on the north eastern coast of US.
A GEDCOM is the file produced for export by the Family History Computer programs, and there are several for the MAC. I am a PC person, but the programs are mostly compatible. Do you use one? Which one?
I am thrilled to be in touch with you, and will get back to you as soon as I can.
Dot ENTWISTLE Stutter, Victoria, BC.
dstutter@shaw.ca

Hullo, my paternal grandmother was Florence Entwistle born 1864 Sheffield County of York - father Golden Entwistle of Sheffield - mother Judith Oversby. Florence married my grandfather Daniel Langston on 8th November 1882 at Owlerton Church of St. John the Baptist - Daniel was a Sergeant in the RA. They were posted overseas with the British Army and served for a time on the North West Border of India. Is there anyone out there who could be related? I have a certain amount of information regarding their children, but am always looking for something new. Love to hear from anyone with additional records.

Margaret Ann Entwistle / John Entwistle , Turton Bolton

Hi, I'm searching for any info on Margaret Ann Entwistle b1870 Bolton. Her father is listed as John Entwistle on her marriage certificate but I am unable to find anything else out from birth to marriage. She married Robert Jardine in Bolton both listed as from Turton. If anyone could give me any help or other ideas as to find anything about Margaret Ann and her father John I would be really grateful.

Hi, Not sure if this is any connection but thought it's worth a try...
My gg grandmother was Margaret Ann Entwistle born in Bolton (1870-1941) her father was John Entwistle, although I have no other info on them I managed to find out that my grandfather (Robert Jardine) had an Auntie, Eliza Jane Dyer nee Entwistle(1877-1968). As Roberts(my grandfathers) mum was Margaret Ann Entwistle I can only presume they were either sisters or cousins?? I viewed the gravestone yesterday and found that My gt grandmother Margaret Ann is buried with Eliza Jane (along with EJ's husband Edward, Mary Orrell, Henry Orrell and Sarah Orrell - I don't know where these fit in??)if anyone has any idea's I'd really appreciate a little helping hand...
Thanks in advance
Sally-Ann

Sunley Emma was my grandmother. After her first husband (Entwistle) died, she moved to Canada and married Albert Taylor. She had two daughters from her first marriage, and had several more children with Albert, one of whom was my father William Albert Taylor. They lived in New Westminster, British Columbia. Her husband Albert died in 1954 and many years later she married Louis Kay. She lived into her 90's, and all her children have now passed away as well. There are many grandchildren, great grand children, etc.

Selina Entwistle

My ancestor William Tutton (a Stockport, Cheshire family) married a Selina Entwistle in Stockport in 1844. The 1851 and 1871 census records (1861 is mysteriously missing despite a very thorough search) show that Selina was born in Preston, Lancs in about 1822.

The 1841 census shows a Salina E aged about right living in Stockport with her mother Fanny and several siblings (eldest Rodger) but, of course no place of birth.

The only Entwistles that fit that I can find via IGI and Ancestry were born in Bolton Le Moors rather than Preston.

Any help using local knowledge (I am a Londoner) will be gratefully accepted. Entwistle seems to be a very common name in Lancashire!

Kind regards

Roger J Tutton
