Hi, thanks for contacting me.
I have Peter John Engberg b. 12 Apr. 1862 in Soderfours, Uppsala Co. Sweden and
d. 8 Aug. 1923 in Bessemer, Gogebic Co. Michigan.
He Immigrated to America in 1886 age 23 from Goteborg, Sweden. destination,
Chicago. He left the port of Goteborg on April 2, 1886 on the ship Orlando for
the port of Hull, England, I haven't been able to find the ship he came on or
port he landed here.
The only possible I have is Erik Gustaf Engberg b. 24 Nov. 1836 in Tegelsmora,
Uppsala, Co. Sweden and d. 20 Dec. 1859 Ostenbo, Tegelsmora, Uppsala Co. Sweden.
I've gotten back to Anders Matsson b. abt 1686 in Odensala, Uppsala Sweden, his
children took the patronymic name of Anderson, Anders Anderson had Christian
Anderson who, when he decided to go into the same business as his father,
changed his last name to Engberg...which in Swedish means Meadow Mountain.
The name is pronounced; Ånga-berg and spelled Ångberg in Swedish...I was
fortunate and was able to visit Sweden years ago and visited the villages and
churches to get more information.
Peter John's father Anders kept the name and Peter came to America,
he had 8 sisters and he was the only male child.
Peter Engberg and family stayed mostly in Florence County Wisconsin and in
Gogebic Co. Michigan and I have yet to find anyone else from his family that
immigrated here.
Engberg is a is pretty common in Sweden, most of the time when they had to
change their names other than the patronymic name, was when they were in the
military...Christian Andersson Engberg was never in the military according to
records in Uppsala.
Let me know if any of this might fit your family, I rather doubt we have any
ties but you never know. If I can give you some advice or help in looking, I
will try my best to give you what I learned in hunting down the Swedish folks.
Cidney Engberg
