At this point the men chose to change the name of the plantation to “Merrymount.” William Bradford records that shortly after the period of “great licentiousness” Morton was recalled to England and the plantation was sold by Wollaston. The new owner, John Endecott, renamed the plantation Mount Dagon. His first act as the new owner was to cut down the maypole.
