Old thread - but has a lesson in it - so I pump this up.

Well, I'd say, they certainly were not from "Sokankyla" (correct spelling is: Sodankylä).

The Gunnaris (correct spelling in many cases: Kunnari) are well known 'birkarln' family. Origins point often to Torne Valley.

The Enbuskes are usually all siblings from a professional mercenary Johan Dynitson Stormlod Tensudd (born 1761), who took an impressement to Enbuske ward. Because the farm was more important than a man - Johan switched his name to Enbuske, which was the name military had gave him.

Btw, 'enbuske' is Swedish and means "juniper bush". Swedish army loved to give their men names which reflected power, fearlessness and other attributes usually linked to a good warrior.

The Enbuske family is genealogically very well documented family and they have a lively genelogical society of their own. This is a link to the societys website: http://www.enbuske.eu

If you are a sibling from a Enbuske (or Enbuska or Enbusk) who emigrated to the States, don't hesitate to contact the Enbuske society. What I've heard they are more than happy to hear about distant roots of their great family.

The lesson was (I forgot to tell it, had so much to write :)

Don't make too quick judgements if you don't know the subject thoroughly.

Gunnari + Enbuskes history is fantastic - and very typical story how the kvens (which were not Finns!) lived, networked, moved and finally emigrated to the USA. Very typical and interesting history!
