Researching Enborg Ancestors

Welcome to the Enborg Message Board...I am researching the family on my mother's side. My mother's (Genevieve A. Enborg De Leon) father was Gustav Erik Enborg--born in 1900 in Illinois. Brothers of Gustav include: Astor, Roy E., Karl B. There may have been one sister called: Ebba. Their dad was Lauritz Enborg who came over from Stockholm in 1886 and Lauritz's dad was Erik Enborg. After immigrating, the Enborgs lived in Cook County, Iowa area and then moved to California (Kingsburg, San Jose and Los Angeles). That's a rough summary of the Enborg info I have. I have also found some Enborgs in the New York and Michigan area, but have not connected the dots yet. Any helpful information is greatly appreciated.

Hi!

My family knew Astor and Inger Enborg who used to lived in the Bristow, Nebraska area and then moved to California, I believe. I remember meeting them when I was a child. I have pictures of them also. If you think that the Astor Enborg that I met is the same one you are researching...let me know. Astor and Inger Enborg were good friends of my maternal grandfather and his family. Christy

Hi Christy, Thanks for your note! I would appreciate any information you may have. What years were they in Bristow, do you remember? Thanks again. It would be amazing to actually see pictures of them. My mom would be thrilled. Best regards, dd

If by Michigan Enborgs you mean Ernest and Karin Enborg, then they would not be related to you.

Do you have any further info re Lauritz Enborg? I have checked some Swedish sources but have not been able to find him. Do you have his date of birth?

Hi, thanks for writing. By far, Lauritz (aka: Lawritz) has been the most challenging to find information on.

Here is what I have found...date of birth for Lauritz Enborg = About 1863 in Sweden (maybe Stockholm). Immigrated in 1886. Parents: Erik Enborg & Johanna Larson.

What research have you found if any?

Thanks,
dd

My grandfather was Edvin Enborg (1902-1990); his father was Carl Enborg (1866-1954). My great grandfather Carl changed his name to Enborg when he went to Canada for a few years.

I think maybe your Lauritz did the same; changed his name when he emigrated. This was quite a common practice among Swedes with patronymic names.
There is no Erik Enborg in the 1890 Swedish census. The name is quite unusual. And also no Lauritz (or indeed any name beginning with an L) Enborg in the Swedish emigrants records, save for a L Enborg, age 32, who went from Sweden to Boston on Oct.9, 1896. This could be your man. His homeparish in the Swedish records is given as "US", meaning that he has been to Sweden to visit, from the US, and is now returning.
Maybe you can check passenger arrivals for Boston for October 1896. That could be something.

Just adding a few things after searching some of my databases.

Swedish records have no Lauritz born 1863-1865 born in Sweden and emigrating, with a father named Carl and mother Johanna.
There are 3 Lauritzes born in 1864 but they were born in Denmark, and emigrated from Sweden to the US or to Denmark.
Lauritz is more of a Danish name than Swedish at least at that point in time. The Swedish name would be Lars, Laurentius, Laurents or even Laurits.

Where did you find the information about his parents name? And his emigration year?

I found the immigration year for Lauritz "Endberg" in the
1920 Census file (pasted below). There were lots of misspellings and mispronounciations back in those days given accents and helpful neighbors getting names wrong when asked to provide census data on another neighbor. The children listed under "Endberg" all match up. One of their kids, my grandfather, was Gustav born in Chicago in 1900..his full name is Erik Gustav Lauritz Enborg.

Lauritz Endberg
Home in 1920: Bristow, Boyd, Nebraska
Age: 55 years
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1865
Birthplace: Sweden
Relation to Head of House: Head
Spouse's Name: Tillie
Father's Birth Place: Sweden
Mother's Birth Place: Sweden
Marital Status: Married
Race: White
Sex: Male
Home owned: Rent
Year of Immigration: 1889
Able to read: Yes
Image: 418

In addition, I have a note from a relative and a few others have validated this information...Erik (Lauritz's father)was an Eriksson, but the family went by Larson in Sweden.

Are you related to the Michigan Enborgs? I reached out to them about 4 yrs ago and received a nice email back with a story about how the "Enborg" name was created.

Hmmm, very tricky. The problem with names like Eriksson and Larsson is that they changed for each generation. They literally meant "son of Erik" and "son of Lars". And the women would have names along a similar line.

So if Lauritz Enborg´s father was called Erik Eriksson, his father would have been Erik Something-son (for instance Andersson, in which case his father would have been Anders Larsson or something like that).
And if the mother was Johanna Larsson (or actually Larsdotter; i.e. "dotter"/Daughter of Lars) her father would have been Lars Johansson or something like that and so on.

And yes, I am related to the Michigan Enborgs; assuming we´re talking about Mr K. Enborg and family.

Yes, I am familiar with the 'son of' and 'dotter' usage and origin. I was lucky enough to go to Sweden last fall for vacation and research. I made great progress on the non-Enborg side of my mother's family (the Bengsston's)...though did not find much on Enborg.
