Astor and Inger were my great aunt and uncle. My grandmother was Elsie Enborg - her brother was Edward Ericson. Elsie's father and mother immigrated to bloomington ,Ill in the 1870's. Ed died in 1971 (or there abouts). Elsie's was an Ericson until she married into the Enborg Family.

It is my understanding that the Enborgs who immigrated to Bloomington, Ill changed their name from Larson to get jobs in the local mines. I was always told it was a fictitious name.

Hi Fellow Enborgs!
Just stumbled onto this message board today. I also heard that our last name was fictitious. Somehow our relatives from Sweden thought it would be easier to remember than their original surnames and would help them to settle into either the U.S. or Canada. From what I was told as a youngster it means either last hill or last castle. My original Enborg connection is Swan Enborg from Bursuryd, Sweden. Does that ring a bell for anyone?

Surnames: Enborg
The name Enborg is constructed from two Swedish words: "en" and "borg". "En" means juniper and "borg" means castle, tower or stronghold.

It is "fictitious" in so far as it was a name which was assumed by different unrelated people who had patronymic names, both in Sweden and Swedish emigrants to America.

Around the turn of the last century it was quite common for people with patronymic names (Andersson, Johansson, Svensson, Larsson and so on) to take new names which were more unique. These names were often constructed by two word elements, one often with some biological meaning, such as a word for a species of tree, a lake, a mountain and so on.
