I am researching John Emslie, born Jamaica, who lived with his wife Jean Cumming and family in Braemar. Some of his children went to California e.g. San Joaquin County
Biographies
JAMES JOHN EMSLIE

JAMES JOHN EMSLIE, a farmer of San Joaquin County, California, is a native of the highlands of Aberdeenshire, Scotland, where he was born July 19, 1819, his parents being John and Jane (Cummings) Emslie, the former a native of Morayshire and the latter of Aberdeenshire. They have always made their home in Scotland. The mother is still living, at the age of ninety years. In the family there were eleven children, five sons and six daughters: three of the children are residing in California.

I have lots on the family but hve no photogrphs - does anyone have any photographs - I hoped the California children might have taken some.

In Pigots directory of 1837 for Crathie & Braemar. John Emslie is Postmaster, the Post Office being at the Fife Arms Inn, Castletown of Braemar, and he is also listed as the Inn Keeper of the Fife Arms, Auchendryne. "POST OFFICE, Fife Arms Inn, CASTLETOWN OF BRAEMAR, John Emslie, Post Mast'r.
There is a painting of the Fife Arms with a gentleman outside welcoming a stagecoach - that gent may be John - does anyone know who owned the Inn - I guess it was not John as it looks quite grand. Does anyone know whether he was a tenant?

Cheers
Bill
