I've just put some puzzle pieces together that might help straighten this family out.
Marriage records from St. Mary's Church in Govanstown indicate that Samuel R. Scharf married Mary Ensor (rather than Emge) Samuel R. Scharf and Mary Ensor also witnessed the marriage of William Bayne and Anna V. Ensor. (you can find this on-line here:
http://www.mdgensoc.org/database_transcriptions/St%20Marys%2...So, using "Ensor" instead of "Emge," I quickly found Phillip Ensor in the 1860 census. He and his wife Mary were born in Germany - as were the three older children John, Joseph and Victory. The youngest child Mary was born in Maryland.

http://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse.dll?db=1860usfedcenan...Another interesting aside is that Mary Emge/Ensor Scharf's death certificate lists her father's name as "Bayne." I haven't figured out how that readily fits into Phillip Ensor/Emge's name, but at least it sheds some light.
