Funeral Services held Tuesday for Pioneer Resident
Robert Elze passes away Saturday at home of son.

Funeral services were conducted in Hope Lutheran Church Tuesday morning by Rev. O. F. Kretzmonn for Robert W. Elze 93, resident of Custer County for 76 years, who died last Saturday (8/18/1951) at the home of his son, Otto. While he had been in poor health for some time, his final illness was of short duration.

Possessed of remarkable physical agility for a man of his age, he often spent many hours at sawing wood by hand, even though an accidental dynamite explosion had deprived him of his eyesight several years ago.

Born in Saxony, Germany on April 29, 1858, he came to the United States in 1880 and settled in Custer County in 1881, engaging in farming and ranching until his retirement in the early thirties.

He was married to Miss Martha O'Graske on April 16, 1882 that marriage being the sixth one recorded in the roster of marriages in Hope Lutheran Church of which he had been a member since coming to Custer County. His wife preceded him in death in March, 1950.

He is survived by five sons, Otto, of Westcliffe, Gottlieb and Arnold, of Pueblo. Charles of California, and Fred of Iowa, four daughters, Mrs. Susie Schwarz, of Silver Cliff, Mrs. Selma Lensch of Westcliffe, Mrs. Bertha Fisher of Denver and Mrs. Lena Rogers, of Santa Fe, New Mexico. 31 grandchildren and 24 great grandchildren.

Burial was in Hope Lutheran Cemetery, with the Menzel Funeral Home in charge.
