INFORMATION ABOUT ROBERT ELY
Robert Ely was born about 1827 in Ohio and died on Jan 30, 1894 in the State Asylum in Athens County, Ohio. His son William G. Ely put him there at the beginning of January 1894. Before that move, he mostly lived in Tate or Williamsburg, Clermont County. After he died, he was buried in Williamsburg, Clermont County. He served both in the Mexican War and the Civil War and was drafted from Clermont County. His sons are William G. Ely (born about 1855), (John) Charles Ely (born about 1862) and his daughters are Rosanna (born about 1866) and Belle (born about 1872). He married Sarah E.(possibly her maiden name is Harden?) on 16 Nov 1851 in Clermont Co., OH. I think Sarah was born between 1831 and 1834 and died on Feb 7 1890. Robert's sister was Mary Ely born about 1819 who married a McCollum (They appear together as brother and sister in the 1880 census in Tate, Clermont, Ohio--Sarah E. Ely is on the same census but in her own household with the children-- it appears that Robert and Sarah split up shortly before 1880). Robert (age 23 born in Ohio) appears in the Benjamin Ely (age 44 born in New Jersey) household in the 1850 census in Tate, Clermont, Ohio (John F.M. Ely age 15 born in Ohio is also in this household as well as other Elys). In the 1860 census in Tate, Clermont, Ohio, Robert is married and lives a couple doors down from Josiah Ely (age 32 born in Ohio). In 1870, Robert lived with his family for a short period of time in Pike, Brown County, Ohio.
