No, we never found the half-sisters, but I found a TON of information on the family and sent it to Bobbie (Smith). I didn't see the actual record, but there is supposed to be a Swiss birth record for A. D. 1260! There were Swiss martyrs, and I found out that it was not just Catholics persecuting Protestants, but when the Reformed faction came into power, they persecuted others, mostly over the question of infant baptism. Thousands were killed, and in one incident they killed over a hundred in one day.

When those who had been persecuted came here, they didn't kill but tried to excommunicate anyone with a different belief. One man said he had read the Bible in the ancient languages. What he found there convinced him that a loving God would not send his people to hell. Hell was invented by church leaders to keep people in line. :-)

Also, I stumped Google with "bell work" as a punishment. I later found it in the Swiss records. Many cities did not have sewers until the mid-1800's. Can you imagine? If sentenced to bell work, the person had to clean the sewage from the streets while he had a strap with bells on it between his feet.

I sent Bobbie your e-mail address, but I forgot to tell her to put the name in the subject box. Her e-mail address starts with boj. Have fun comparing notes!
