Hello

I am also doing research on the surname ELWES. I have only gone back as far as 1778 in Norwich and I have no idea if this information is even correct. My ancestor John Elves (b. 1778) of Norwich is my brick wall. I have provided details below. If your information has any possible resemblances, please contact me.

My brick wall is as follows:

John ELWES (b. abt. 1778) Norwich, England
He married a woman abt. 1807 by the name of
Mary (surname unknown) (b. abt. 1790)
They had the following children:
William (b. abt 1808) James (b. abt. 1812)
Sarah (b. bet. 1812-1816)
John (b. abt. 1816)
Mary (b. abt. 1818)
All born in St. Leonard's Shoreditch, London, England.

John had joined the Royal Navy on August 31, 1809. He served on HNS Namar as an able seaman and as an able seaman and carpenter's assistant on The Lion - Man of War until he had an accident "falling from the ship's rigging". He was admitted to the Bombay Hospital as Patient #780 on April 15, 1810 and discharged and shipped back to England on January 17, 1811.

In 1819, the whole family of seven (7) set sail to North America. They landed in New York harbour. They immediate continued their trek northwest to Georgina Township, Ontario, Canada.

I am the GGG Granddaughter through his son James.

I have most of the information on this family since they came to Canada, but our brick wall is the relatives that were left behind in England. Any help on this lineage in England would be most helpful.

Thank you.
