I have a painting of Mary German Elwell by H.W Patterson dated 1837. Very recently 2 paintings have been auctioned in the US of Thomas and Mary German Elwell. The female sitter is the same as in my painting. Thomas Elwell was a resident of Wolverhampton in the United Kingdom and lived at Compton Hall ( the latter built for him by architect Sir Edward Banks). I assumed the two individuals were married but it appears that Thomas was married to Eleanor Bingham, they had nine children and she died in 1821. The latter suggests that Mary German Elwell may have been his second wife or a relative. I am researching in New Zealand and was wondering whether someone could check the Iron Elwell book for me.
