I am looking for information on the family of my G Grandfather Thomas Elvin. He probably left his home town to find work as a farm labourer in Leicestershire, he married Harriet Hazard in 1898 at Market Bosworth. Worked at Tooley Park. Died aged 46 cutting farm hedges. Children taken to the workhouse. Children Agnes (emigrated to Australia) Arthur, William Henry, Alice Ellen, George, Ernest, Thomas. Can you help.

Try looking for Thomas ELVIN on 1881 Census

Hi -- Responding to Marilyn's inquiry about Thomas ELVIN who was a farm worker in Leceistershire, ENG (late 1800s-early 1900s?)
Marilyn, was Thomas born in Leceistershire or did he just move there later? You said that he left his "home town" but didn't mention what town it was. Also, what was his DOB, even if approximate? It would help to know.
If he was married in 1898 (as you said), that probably means he was born before 1881. If that's correct, then you can look for him on the 1881 English census which has been fully indexed. Unfortunately, it's not online but it's available on fiche at Mormon Family History Centres and it's also available on CD. You can search all of England for every Thomas ELVIN born around the right time. Hopefully, you will find him listed with his family although if he was in his early teens or a bit older by that time, children often went off at an early age to live/work away from home. And if you find several possible Thomases, it may take you a bit of time to figure out which one is "yours".
Hope this helps. If you need any further information about searching this census, let me know. It's a great tool for finding anyone living in England in 1881! Regards, Andrea (ELVIN Message Board and mailing list admin)
