From a book written in the 1600s, I have read that the original meaning of this last name had the root words wold, and ston / ton. Of course another word for wold is moor - a prarie type of land such as the Yorkshire Moors in England. The meaning of ston / ton is house. So, it appears that the name meant House on the Moor.
I'm interested in other meanings that you may have come across. My derivation was from the original Olde English spelling.
