Hello Margaret,
We're very pleased to find a member of the Elmes family. We're relatives of your late husband. Our great grandmother was Marion Elmes the sister of Robert Henry Elmes who was Julius Paul's father. Marion came to London from Ireland sometime before 1881 as in the Census of that year she was recorded as working as a nurse at the Mile End workhouse in the East End of London. In 1883, Marion married our great grandfather, James John Milton. In 1891, they are both recorded as living at the Bethnal Green workhouse, also in the East End of London. In 1901, they're living in one room with their children in Hoxton another very poor part of London at the time. Marion must have died between 1901 and 1911 as James John is recorded as a widow in the 1911 Census.
One of Marion and James John's children was Susan Milton who was our mother's mother.
We can see that you have done a lot of research into the Elmes family and we'd be very keen to make contact and swap information. You can contact us via this message board or at

Alan Melville and Duncan Melville (brothers)
