Does anyone have any information about what happened to Calvin, age 19 when he was convicted of murdering Roy Latham, age 18, in Ashe County? He was convicted in late 1895 and sentenced to 20 years in the state penitentiary. I have seen newspaper reports stating he was being transported to Raleigh, but have found no further information about him other than his tombstone which says he died in 1901. (But then, it also says he was born in 1886 which I know is off by ten years, since he was recorded in the 1880 census). He was the son of Hansford and Catherine Graybeal Eller of the Clifton area in Ashe County, NC. I'd like to know if he died in prison or was released early...how he died, etc. He is not listed on the 1900 census as being an inmate of the NC State Penitentiary in Raleigh. In fact, I cannot find him on a census anywhere in 1900, although there are other Calvin Ellers around at the time that are obviously not him. Thanks for any help!
