Hi Pat,

My thoughts about Arthur are in two parts.

Part One.

In the 1871 Census, Arthur is declared as the "son" of Edward and Elizabeth Elkington

His birth is most probably the GRO reference for Arthur George 1865 Q3 Woburn District. - George also being the name of Edward's younger brother.

In 1861, Edward and Elizabeth and family are recorded as "Elkerton".

In 1851, they are "Elkington". Edward was declared as of Potsgrove, age 33.

In 1841, Edward is recorded with John "Hulgerton" and Hannah at Battlesden.

Edward was the son of John Elkerton and Hannah Ashby who married 16 Oct 1812 at Postgrove. Edward was baptised 13 or 18 Feb 1813.

If the above lineage were correct, then Arthur would have been a descendant of the North Oxfordshire Elkingtons - i.e. of Richard 1505/1515, probably from his first son, John - via John Elkerton of Potsgrove

Part 2.

However on further investigation, there is a query about Arthur George Elkington, whom as you said was baptised in 1866. The record gives the baptism as 20 May 1866 at Battlesden by Hannah Elkington.

In the 1881 Census, both Arthur and Bertram are declared as "grandchildren" by Edward Elkington, and so it appears they were children of Edward's daughters -

Arthur of Hannah (she was born c. 1847) and Bertram of Mary Ann(she born c. 1857, the latter being surmised from the 1901 Census when Mary Ann is with William Rickett(s) as wife, and Bertram Elkington as "son".

Hannah appears to have subsequently married William Kingham in 1868. Mary Ann appears to have susequently married William Richetts in 1881.

If the above is correct, then Edward's wife Elizabeth Birch (not BIRD as recorded in Elkington Records) was the grandmother of both, as expected from the 1891 Census, which you mentionned.

Elizabeth Birch was baptised 15 Feb 1818 and Edward Elkerton 13 or 18 Feb 1818, both in Battlesden, Edward being of John Elkerton and Hannah Ashby.

There is also mention of "scandal" in the Battlesden family by their living descendants on "Rootschat", which refers to Edward's older sister Letitia as marrying the widower of her sister Mary, after a period of cohabitation.

I assume your contact Mr Rolls was related to Minnie Rolls who married William Elkerton in 1931, William being a descendant of Arthur's cousin Bertram.

I have found a living descendant of William and Minnie, and hence of Bertram, in the "GenesReunited" community. He has a family tree which dates back to John and Hannah Ashby, and has posted a note shewing that he knows details of the family stories on "Rootschat".

This may be a way for you to determine in more detail whether you are related to them, via the Cropredy Elkingtons, and to what degree.

This Clive Elkington has published his address as 71 Woburn Rd, Heath and Reach, Bedfordshire.

Needless to say, all the above needs checking. I would be interested to read how this evolves !

regards Don
