FLY CREEK — Mrs. Margaret Elkan, 94, of Fly Creek Valley died Monday afternoon, Aug. 17, 1998 at her home.
Funeral arrangements are pending under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

Margaret Elkan
FLY CREEK — Margaret Elkan, 94, of Fly Creek Valley, died Monday afternoon, Aug. 17, 1998 at her home.
Margaret was born on May 10, 1904, the fifth of six children, to Otto and Marianne (Koenitzer) Hirschfeld in Frankfurt, Germany.
She was married to Walter B. Elkan in January of 1943. Walter died on July 26, 1957.
Margaret studied horticulture, as well as X-ray and clinical laboratory science. She also attended Dr. Hoch's Conservatory in Frankfurt, studying violin. She came to the United States in 1938 and for 20 years assisted Dr. Theodore Peters Sr., at Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown.
Margaret was a member of the German Reform Church.
She is survived by a son, Paul W. Elkan of Cooperstown; two step-sons, John B. Elkan of Cobleskill and Alfred Elkan of Manhattan; 10 grandchildren; a sister, Mile Braach and a brother, Oskar Hirschfeld, both of Frankfurt, Germany and nieces, nephews and cousins.
Friends are invited to attend a memorial gathering and service at noon on Thursday, Aug. 20, 1998 at Margaret's home in Fly Creek Valley, with the Rev. Eileen Kellogg, pastor of the United Methodist Church of Fly Creek, officiating.
Margaret's remains will be interred beside her husband in the Fly Creek Valley Cemetery.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.
