CANFIELD, OH - Glen Camille El-Hayek, 33, died recently in Shanghai, China, where he was working for Microsoft.

Glen was born Feb. 7, 1978, in Youngstown, Ohio a son of Dr. and Mrs. Salim El-Hayek (Annette).

A 1996 honor graduate of Boardman High School, Glen went on to pursue studies at Colorado State University. He graduated Magna Cum Laude in 2000 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science. Following graduation, Glen worked as a software developer in Roseville, Calif. for Hewlett Packard and then for Wachter Technologies, where he helped develop software that made online trading possible.
Since 2003, Glen worked for Microsoft Corporation, first in Redmond, Wash., and then in Shanghai, as Senior Test Lead in Research and Development. He was also pursuing an Executive MBA at the University of Chicago, Booth School of Business. While he mainly studied at the Singapore campus, he also rotated through the London and Chicago campuses.

Glen has been described by his friends as “larger than life,” and indeed, he lived life to its fullest. As a child, he was a champion Scottish Highland Dancer and later became a champion skier. He was a ski patroller in both California and Washington and was trained in search and rescue. He also worked on Habitat for Humanity and Microsoft-sponsored goodwill endeavors, including the relief effort for the earthquake-shattered city of Chengdu, China.

Over the past decade, Glen traveled the globe extensively for work and pleasure, making new friends wherever he went. Despite constantly being on the move, he always tried to attend friends’ weddings, whether they occurred in the United States or in Karachi, Pakistan. Besides English, Glen also spoke French, Spanish and Mandarin.

Glen is survived by his parents, Dr. and Mrs. Salim El-Hayek (Annette) of Canfield; a brother and sister-in-law, Dr. and Mrs. Kevin El-Hayek (Raechel); and his nieces, Keira Marie and Alison Kate, each of Cleveland.

Glen was in the process of relocating to New York City to be closer to his family. He will be forever remembered as a wonderful son, brother, uncle, and friend.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Kinnick Funeral Home, 477 N. Meridian Road in Youngstown. Arrangements are pending and will be published at a later date.

Visits to Glen’s family and the outpouring of support and many gestures of kindness have been overwhelmingly comforting to the El-Hayek family.
At this time, Glen’s family requests privacy in their home, yet will receive condolences on Saturday, April 2, from 4 to 6 p.m. and on Sunday, April 3, from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Arab-American Community Center, 15 Belgrade St. in Liberty Township, just off Belmont Avenue.
