My sister and I bought several paintings by Florence Elgar at a yard sale in Deptford, NJ in 2000. The woman who sold us the paintings told me that she and her late husband were neighbors of Mrs. Elgar and that her husband would do odd jobs for Mrs. Elgar and she would give him her paintings as payment. Soon after purchasing the paintings, I posted a query on the Woodstock Artists Guild website seeking information on Florence Elgar. I received one reply...from "Lawrence" who told me that Mrs. Elgar was born Florence Irimescu in New York City around 1900. Her father was a diplomat from either Hungary or Romania. She lived in NYC but went up to Woodstock to paint. "Lawrence" also said that he was a child, Mrs. Elgar had painted his portrait. I checked a few years ago to see if my post and the reply were still there, but they had been removed.
