My great, great grandfather, (Walter Howard), may have been Winifred’s great uncle as follows: Walter Howard was the brother or John Howard; John Howard was the father of Cora Jane Elford (nee Howard); Cora Jane Elford was the mother of Winifred Elford.
Winifred was the eldest daughter of Frederick Elford and Cora Jane Elford (nee Howard).
Gwendoline Elford was Winifred’s younger sister; they also had three brothers: Victor Howard Elford (b. 20 February 1902), Leslie Howard Elford (b. 18 July 1904) and Frederick Howard Elford (b. 1 March 1908). All five children were born in Coleford, Devon, England.
Cora Jane’s maiden name was given as the middle names for all three boys, (a tradition that anther of Cora Jane’s sisters (Emily Dummett (nee Howard)) applied to her four children.
Winifred (aged fourteen years) and Gwendoline (aged 10 years) left Southampton on 24 September 1920 on a ship called the Scandinavian. They arrived in Quebec on 3 October, with their destination listed as Peterborough, Ontario. Both girls were part of the child immigration scheme (Home Children) via the Barnardo’s charity.
Cora Jane was listed as the nearest living relative on the girls’ passenger declaration forms. This is interesting as I don’t know why their father wasn’t listed? I’m assuming that he had passed away, which is why the girls were put forward by their mother, (although I haven’t been able to find a death reference for their father, Frederick Elford).
Two of Winifred’s brothers ended up living in Coventry, Warwickshire, England. Whilst Frederick (jnr.) remained in Devon until his death in 1995 as did Winifred’s mother until her death in 1973.
Gwendoline returned to England in June 1934, returning to the same home that they had left fourteen years’ earlier; 24 Dean Street, Crediton, Devon, England. (The house is still there, so you can view it on Google Earth).
I have plenty more information about the Howard family; many still live in mid-Devon such as my Aunt, (if related would be your 3rd cousin once removed), who’ll hopefully I’ll be visiting in a couple of weeks.
