I ran across a family page (Heartland Grove 9111 slord.htm) listing a Mehitable Ela w/o David McKeen Jr. Mehitable doesn't seem to be listed in D.H. Ela.
I found the family listed in the 1850 Stoneham Census record, and Mehitable is aged 38 so b. abt. 1812 and claimed b. in New Hampshire.
The McKeens had many children including these four who married McAllister siblings: Loren m. Lydia McAllister, Annie P m. Amos McAllister, Silas m. Mehitable McAllister, and Burnham m. Lucy McAllister.

Does anyone recognize this Mehitable?

Yes, I recognize the name Mehitable Ela. She was the daughter of William Ela and Lydia Ordway. She was born April4, 1812 in Conway, New Hampshire and died Dec 6, 1852 in Stoneham, Maine. What other information do you want on this family?

Dorene --thank you for your reply. I descend from John Ela of Conway later Fryeburg, a branch that is excluded from the Ela genealogy book. I had noticed that Mehitable also doesn't appear in th book and suspected she was from the same line. Since posting this query I had another researcher link Mehitable as sister of John based on a Conway VR listing. Do you have any clues or information on William, such as whether he served in War of 1812 or any clues on his parents? This is the current roadblock.

According to a printout I have William died in the war of 1812. His father was Joseph Ela from England. He and his wife came to America in the latter part of the 17th century and settled in the town of Lancaster, NH. William was an only child and he married Lydia Oddway of Conway, NH.

I am descended from the "Fryeburg Elas". Mehitable is also from that line, which has been previously stated on this board.

I cannot find any information on William Ela, who was married to Lydia Oddway (or Ordway). I have a letter that was supposedly written by James Ela (my great-grandfather), which states that the progenitor of our Ela line was Joseph Ela who died in the War of 1812. However, I've done research at the National Archives and can find no mention of him in records of that war; nor can I find any record of him at all. In the introduction to the Ela Genealogy, the author claims that there is no connection, and that the Fryburg Ela family descends from a Joseph Healy of Dunbarton. Again, I can find no corroboration of this.

This is a stone wall, and I'm unable to find any further information. If anyone has any other information, please let me know. Thanks in advance.

I have that Joseph Ela and his wife came from England. They had one son William. He was the one that died in the war of 1812. William who married Lydia Ordway(oddway) had one son,John, and five daughters. Only four daughters are listed. They are Ruth, Sarah,Mehitable and Eliza. John was born 1806 and died 1886. He married Lucinda Meader and he married second Jane Doloph and had eleven children by thid wife. If send me a snail address I will send you the printout I have of the Ela's.

I'm delighted to find that you're still here! I'm pretty much ok with John Ela - I've visited his grave, and seen those of Lucinda and Jane. The "mystery man" seems to be William. The Town Records of Conway show both Jonathan and William as residing and paying taxes in Conway in 1801 and 1802. Jonathan appears in the U.S. Census of 1810, but William does not. If, as family tradition holds, he died in the War of 1812, he would still have been somewhere for the 1810 census, and most likely, still married to Lydia. Ordway seems to be quite a common name in New England, and searches for Lydia as a widow have, so far, been fruitless. If you have more information on the Ordways, that would be very helpful. I will send my snail mail address to your hotmail address.

By the way, I have copies of muster records for the War of 1812 for Joseph Healy and Joseph Ela - probably the same soldier. But have found nothing on William from that war.

Thank you SO much for responding!
