Hi Jan,
I am descended from Lars Theodor Ekman. He's my g2grandfather. I broke through the brick wall of what happened to him this past weekend. Much of the trouble finding him stems from the number of names he used over time, and his habit of stating his age falsely.

He declared his intent to become naturalized in April of 1883, in La Crosse, Wisconsin, using the name Thom Ekman.
His petition for naturalization was signed on 15 Jul 1911 in Rolette County, ND. He states his name on the petition as Lars Theodore Ekman, dob 14 Jan 1855. He lists a wife named Emma Mary and a son born in Jan of 1911 named William John.

His Oath of Allegiance was signed 6 Nov 1911.

The 1910 census of Rolette County shows a Thomas Ekman, aged 44 and wife Marie E age 17 (actual ages: 55 and 15). Number of years married is not filled in.

Marie Emma/Emma Marie/Mary Emma was on the rolls of the Turtle Mountain Indian Reservation, so the family is tracked almost yearly after that, even after they moved. In years where it is known where they are living, the location is Ramsey County, Minn.

The 1920 Fed Census shows Lars and Marie E. Ekman living in St. Paul, MN where he is working at the Coke plant. At that time they have 3 children, William John, Augusta Emma and Mary Rosa. Their second child, Charley Victor/Victor Charley, died in 1915, as noted in the Indian census rolls.

Mary Rosa was born in 1919 in St. Paul. Her birth certificate is on file at the Minnesota History Center library. Parents' names were listed as L. Thomas Ekman and Marie Hayes. Father's age is listed as 53, mother's as 25. His birthplace: Sweden Her birthplace: Belcourt, ND. His color: white. Her color: 1/2 white, 1/2 Indian. The certificate lists 4 live births, with 3 currently living.

Another daughter, Lizzie V, is noted on the Indian census rolls, but I cannot find a Minnesota birth cert for her. ACcording to the reservation's records, her date of birth was 26 Dec 1921.

Finally, on 2 Nov 1928, there is a female Ekman baby born to Lars Ekman and Emma Hayes at Ancker Hospital in St. Paul. Father's age: 49, Mother's age: 33. Father's color: white; Mother's color: red. Birth place father: Sweden; Birth place mother: North Dakota.

The 1930 Fed Census shows Thomas Ekman living in a downtown Minneapolis hotel. Age 64, year of immigration 1881, Naturalized 1911, Father born in Sweden, mother born in Germany. He is listed as an unemployed farm laborer. He claims to be single. I find no sign of Marie and the kids. The Indian Rolls still list her as late as 1937 living in Ramsey County.

There is a 1934 death certificate for Thomas Ekman in Hennepin County, who died in Minneapolis General Hospital of obstructive jaundice after a 3 day stay in the hospital. He lists no next of kin and claims he is a widower. His date of birth is listed as 14 Jan 1877(!). Mother's maiden name is listed as "???? Closee" He was buried in Crystal Lake Cemetery, Minneapolis. I went to the cemetery yesterday to find the grave site. It is unmarked, and was paid for by the city.

The man had 2 wives and 12 kids (11 still living) and died alone.
