a resident of Erie passed away Thursday, March 19, 2009 ,
He was born June 4, 1928 in Erie the son of the late Evan and Katherine Burke Ekimoff. Leonard was a graduate of Erie Tech high school and was one of the original “Whiz Kids”. An outstanding athlete, Leonard attended the University of South Carolina and played both football & basketball where he earned All-Southern conference honors. For 22 years he served as the Recreation Administrator for the city of Erie retiring in 1990. Leonard was a past president of the Boys & Girls Club of Erie and also the Erie Chapter of the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame and Vice President of the PA State Hall of Fame. He was an active member of the Russian Orthodox Church of the Nativity. Other memberships Leonard held included the CYS, Erie Maennerchor, Zukor, and Holy Trinity Clubs. He was the recipient of the 1988 Boys Club Man & Youth Award and the 1980 Erie YMCA Handball Club Man of the Year Award. He served as Commissioner of the Glenwood Baseball League and the Eastside Slow Pitch league for 16 years. He was secretary/treasurer of the Erie Municipal Golf Commission for 9 years. He was also on the board of the Stadium Commission.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a grandson, Daniel Ekimoff;
brother John Ekimoff,
two sisters, Olga Visnakovs and Betty Etter; and daughter-in-law Pam Ekimoff. Leonard is survived by his wife, Christine Hyziewicz, a son, David of Webster N.Y., three daughters, Catherine (Henry) Desmarais of Alexandria, Va.; Pam (Ken) Sprague and Chris (Mark) Porada of Erie. He is the brother of Nancy Dunegan of Erie and Lana Ekimoff of Alexandria, Va. Also surviving are eight grandchildren: Greg, Christopher, Bethany Ekimoff, Mike, Mark (Aricca) Desmarais. Katie (William) McManus, Jeff and Abby Porada. Friends are invited to call at the Russian Orthodox Church of the Nativity, 251 E. Front St., Sunday from 2 p.m.-8 p.m. and are invited to attend Funeral Services there Monday at 8:30am. Burial will be in the St John the Divine Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Church of the Nativity Endowment Fund or the Boys & Girls Club of Erie, 1515 E. Lake Rd., Erie, PA 16511. Arrangements were by the John J. Quinn Funeral Home, West 9th & Liberty Street.
