The following was posted in the July 4th, 1987 edition of The Harlem (Montana) News.

Ernest Peter Ekegren was born in Scandia, Minnesota on August 16,1875. On May 12,1900 he was married to Hannah C Sondquist. In 1908, he came to Harlem and his family followed in 1909. In 1910 he built teh Lake Mercantile Company. This general store, handling everthing from dry goods to farm implements, served travelers and residents of teh area until 1922, when it was struck by a tornado. Thsi was repaired, but the building was destroyed by fire in 1924. The dry goods department wasmoved to teh Barton Building, now Don's Pharmacy and was managed by C. R. Hatfield. The farm machinery was moved into the former Blaine County State Bank building. He also operated teh Harlem Funeral HOme at this time. In December 1929 he moved into the present site of Hellman's Auto Parts. Mr. Ekegren was also instrumental in founding the Reed-Ekegren Elevator Company. He was a charter memeber of the Masonic Order in Harlem and of the Harlem Lion's Club. He served on the Harlem School Board and supported the Presbyterian Church. He also served as state representative and state senator from Blaine County.
Mrs Ekegren passed away June 9,1948 and Mr. Ekegren on March 25,1955. Of their nine children, four survive (in 1987); Waldo, Kermit, Woody and Elaine. (In 1987) Woody and Elaine still lived in the Harlem area.
