He lived at 13 Bempstead Road, Walthamstow, U.K.

He worked at the local Junior School a caretaker and physical training instructor.

He died some time in the early 1950s.

To the best of my knowledge there were three daughters, Jessie, Elsie, Dorothy (my mother), a daughter whose name I cannot recall but who died young, and a son killed in the 1st World War serving in the Royal Navy.

Raymond Creevy.
I have James Eke b.c. 1808 One Man Wood Dalling, Norfolk and Lucy Mary Sands christened 1827 Hindolveston. I have their children as: William, Randall, Hannah, Agnes, Herbert, Anna and Julia Edelthia. I don't have the James or Sarah that you mentioned and I surmise that Julius could possible be Julia. I don't have the same birth years as you do for William and Hannah. Marg.

Eke Family Line

Hi there all, Please bear with me as I'm new to this. My grandfather is I think John CB Eke who was born in East Dereham,Norfolk. His father was also John(1844) and mother Sarah(1845). John CB disappears by the time of the 1901 census. Could anyone who has a 'lost' relative i.e. John CB,please advise as this could be my grandfather who came to Singapore possibly after 1902? I only found out a few days ago that my Humphries grandfather wasn't my real grandfather, but John Eke was. That would explain why my Father's son was called Charles Henry Eke and ny father Cuthbert Brighton Humphries. When in fact he was an Eke. So my grandmother has married twice. Her maiden name was Maria Van Der Beck. This all happened in Singapore after approx 1904. I'm guessing

I dont know if we are related , but would you be able to tell me if records for John CB vanished after the 1901 census. If he did it's because he came to Singapore where he married my grandmother Maria Van Der Beck. I would be most grateful if you can help me thrown some light on this. Thank You

Hi, Roger,
I have a Theobold on my tree, but he is our of my line, so I have no-one later than Theobold b. 1843, parents William Eke and Ester Flood). However, I do go back to William Eke, b. 1660. If you are interested in this material, I can give you either a GEDCOM or FTM file, or a MS Word report - I prefer the former myself, as it can go straight into a genealogy program. In return, Id appreciate any information you can add.
Dear Jane, My great-grandfather,Theobald Eke, was also living in Chelsea at around 1900, having been formerly from the Eke family of Binham,Norfolk. My grandfather,Thomas Flood Eke (descended from Esther Flood ),was born in Chelsea, and my mother, Amy Doreen Eke, in Fulham (1924). Thomas was run over & killed in 1925, so neither I nor mum knew him !! Roger Mills, Henley-on-Thames ( b. 1947 )

Well done Jane so that mortar wasn't too thick afterall. It would appear our trees separated at Peter Eke (1740) & Frances Dorly. So distant Cousin is it on to the next brick wall? We must be glutons for punishment!! Do you have a transcript of Williams' will or a copy that would be of interest if you have that available.
Cheers
Phil

My Ekes are sorted out! I thought I would email to say that all the mortar I chipped away at finally yielded its secrets! I finally found out that my g grandfather, Robert James Eke b Hindolveston 1849 was the son of James (1825) and Lucy (Sands)and that James was the son of James (1797) born in Guestwick, but christened in Wood Dalling. He was married to Hannah ? He in turn was the son of John (1765 East Dereham) and Tammy Patfield. John was the son of Peter Eke (1740 East Dereham) and Frances Dorly. Peter Eke was the son of another Peter Eke (1708 East Dereham) and Mary Foulsham. That Peter was the son of Francis Eke (1684 East Dereham) and Mary Lance and Francis was the son of William and Martha Eke. I don't know anything about them except that William died in 1705 and left a will with all his children's names.I attach this info in case it is of use to anyone else out there trying to put their Ekes together! Don't give up! Jane
Hi Jane and Phil,

I'm in the same position as both of you. I have a James Eke who was born in about 1822 in Norfolk. He married aged 29 at St Andrews, Plymouth. I have him on all censuses from 1851 - 1881, but can't make the connection back to Norfolk.

His father from the marriage certificate was John Eke. The nearest match I've found was born 5/July/1821 in Reepham. I wonder if anybody has a James whi vanished?

mark Dudley

I have a missing link that I am particularly interested in - trying to trace the father of James Eke b 1796. I think it was another James Eke b 1775 but need to be certain. Anyway, would love to see the whole Eke history.

Look forward to hearing from you. Jane

I do not know her second name but she had a sister named Anne, also a brother Henry Thomas born 1834,my ancestor. Their father was William married to Martha, but their g grandfather was Peter born 1740 in Wooddalling. Hope this might be of help.Should you have any more info on Ekes in Weasenham or nearby S.Creake I would be delighted to hear from you.

Hi George

You were kind enough to reply to my last post, and I now have some new names - namely Robert James Eke, b Oct 1849 in Hindolveston. Siblings: Sarah, William, Julius and Anna. His parents were James b 1825 in Norfolk and Lucy Sands b 1830 Hindolveston. His parents were James b 1797 in Guestwick and Hannah (Unknown) b 1796 Boultham. The James b in 1825 had a brother William b 1822 and sister Hannah b 1821. If any of these tie up with any of yours I would love to hear from you! Best wishes Jane

However, having at long last thought I had a handle on James Robert Eke (my great grandfather) I have been on the Ainscough (?) Eke site and I may even have the wrong one! Grrr! If you do have any more info on this generation of the Ekes I would really appreciate it.

Best wishes, Jane

Hi Laura

I think that your ancestor William and my ancestor James were brothers? Their mother and father being John (b 1820 Corpusty) and Martha Cotterill (b 1823 Wood Dalling). If you have any information that you would like to share on this family I would be really grateful.
Thanks Phil, your post made me laugh - and the analogy is a good one - I am busy chipping away - as you say I probably need to make a trip to North Norfolk as he is possibly from East Dereham or Fakenham - and could be either Robert James Eke or James Robert Eke or William Robert Eke - all three names appear on different birth/marriage certificates - perhaps they are three different people! Who knows! All I can say is that they were amazingly free with changing names and forgetting to register births or even in some cases forgetting they were already married! Oh well - who knows, we may be related a long way back - I live in Dorset, England by the way! Good luck, Jane

Hi there - not sure if I can help, but just wanted to say that I am also new to the Eke family research and have hit a bit of a brick wall - my Eke connection is my grandfather Albert Eke b 1890, Holborn to Laura Burgess and her then partner - Robert James Eke (although on his marriage certificate he appears as William Robert Eke) and in the Census 1891 as James Robert Eke. They went on to have William Robert Eke in 1893 and Frederick Percy Eke in 1894 and then split up. I know he stayed in contact with the family, but as I am adopted I have very little other information. I know that my great grandfather came from Norfolk - possibly Dedham, Dereham or Fakenham and was born around 1849. It would be great if any of this linked with your research, but I just wanted to say good luck! Best wishes Jane

I was interested to see that you have a large file on the Eke family - I am really stuck and just wondered if any of your information matched up. My grandfather was Albert Eke, b July 1890 Holborn to Laura (Burgess) and Robert James Eke (the name on his birth certificate) although it could be William Robert Eke - the name of his father on his marriage certificate! Even more confusing the census has him as James Robert Eke. All I know is that he was born in Norfolk, possibly Dereham/Dedham or Fakenham around 1840. He was an engineer/inventor and lived in Chelsea around the 1900s. Any help much appreciated! Best wishes Jane

Hi,

I am trying to find William Eke in the 1871 census.

I have his birth certificate: b 9/8/1861 at 5 Castle Street Plymouth to James Eke and Sarah Jane, late Waycott, formerly Lang (I have their marriage certificate - Married March 23rd 1851 at St Andrew, Plymouth - she was a widow). He is named as William EDWARD Eke.

I also have William's marriage certificate from 6th August 1882 to Elizabeth Ann Cole at the Register Office, Plymouth. He is now William HENRY Eke.

In 1881 he is living with his future wife's family at rear of 6 Willow Street, Plymouth (Wm H. Eke)

In 1891 he is listed as born 1862 in Plymouth. (Still Henry)

I can't find a birth for a henry, so I assume that this is the same person, but could do with finding him 1871 to double check ...

Two of his brothers are aboard the vessel Myrtle in the Welsh census in 1871 (Daniel and James).

Somebody has found a William Edwards (b Plymouth abt 1857) aboard the vessel Anne in the Welsh census and wondered if it might be the elusive William having lied about his age ..

Can anybody help?

Mark Dudley
Daughter Christanna (b1871-1946) m1890 Adam Robinson then emigrated to Australia. It's early days so any hints for my research in the old dart would be appreciated.
Hi Jane
Thanks for the encouragement!! I don't know why I started all this family history caper fortunately the frustrations of brick walls have been balanced by break throughs in other arms of my family.....so keep chipping away at the wall eventually the mortar fails.
I've had a good look through my Eke family & traced forward some of the 4g, 3g uncles via the census but have not found a connection with William or James Robert Eke.
There is likely to be some connection in the not to distant past as Eke isn't a large family group & seem to be concentrated in the Aylsham/Fakenham area prior to 1900. For instance, Guestwick & Corpusty keep appearing in my family.
If you live in England, researching in the north of Norfolk would be a good start with some of the local records. I'm stuck with web-based research at the moment unless I get desperate & pay for a researcher.....
Take care & I hope the mortar isn't too strong
Phil

Sorry, Jane, but none of these names crop up in my file. But there seems to have been lots of Ekes in Norfolk, so don't be discouraged. I would suggest that you put this data into a query on RootsChat - I've found that is a really good way to get information. Please let me know if you get any other, earlier names - they may yet track back to someone on my tree, and we can then share information.
Good luck, George.

Hi, Jane,
Sorry to take so long - it's been a busy period!
I can't find these people in my tree, but they have to fit there somewhere, as my direct line came from Hindolveston.
All of the Ekes are related back to a common ancestor, William Eke of 1660, it seems. But there are a number of branches I do not have in detail and this is one of them. All that I have is on our tree on Genes Reunited - if you want to contact me through there I can give you permission to view it, or alternatively I can send you a GEDCOM file or genealogy report via this board.
Cheers, George

I think the John Eke you mention is my wife's ancestor. He's the son of Peter born 1772 in Wood Dalling.

John had a son called Jabez. This was the line I traced.

I could tell you more, but it would honestly ruin your fun. The Eke's trace back quite a way.

I'd like to know the derivation of the name. My father-in-law is convinced it's Dutch and that they came across to Norwich in the 1600s. I can't substantiate this though. If you have any info I'd be interested.

I have looked at your web sight re Eke and noticed several Peters.I have an Elizabeth Ann Eke b abt 1817 to a Peter Eke, labourer. She mar a widower William Charter 1846 in Coates Whittlesey. They had no children but came to Australia 1852 with William's 2 children.the only info I have for her in England is from her MC and her DC- this says she was born in Weasingham.
Does any of this connect with any of what you have?
