I am trying to track my maternal great grandfather. He was James Eke, born in Norfolk - possibly around 1840, married to Lydia Waterson. I have his son's birth cert - Henry George, b.5/6/1867, Hindolveston. My grandmother Mary Jane, was born in North Ormsby, Lancs, 23/4/1874. The family seems to have settled around Ashington, Northumberland.Can anyone help?

My gt gt granny was Susannah Eke of Drayton.This is quite close to Hindolveston.She had both a brother and a cousin called James.her brother James was born in 1847 in Drayton.Their father Aquilla Eke was a blacksmith.The cousin James Eke trained as a blacksmith under Aquilla.This cousin was born in 1831 in Guestwick.Any help ? Thank you. I have encountered the name Aquilla Eke before, but I can't connect him. All my ancestors were from Hindolveston or nearby, so he must be one of mine! I can't connect the nephew James either. According to the 1851 census, Aquilla had a daughter Susan born 1842, James born 1845 and nephew James b. 1822, all in Drayton. Aquilla was born 1801 in Hindolveston, in 1851 Census he is a blacksmith in Drayton (as is nephew James) so it must be him!
Do you have any further information?

Further to my previous, we just checked the census and nephew James was actually born 1830 - the transciber messed up!

Hi, we are obviously related via the James Eke who is the nephew of my Aquilla.I have not had the opportunity to see the original Hindolveston Parish Records but one can infer much from the IGI.Aquilla seems to have had Robert John Peter and Thomas as siblings in Hindolveston.Possibly John and Tam were their parents.There is a Joseph born in 1779 to a William and Joanna Eke in Hindolveston.So is Joseph = John or was there another child ? I can't connect them. I have a very large file fo Ekes, going back to William Eke born ca 1640, but of course I do not have every branch below him.

I was interested to see that you have a large file on the Eke family - I am really stuck and just wondered if any of your information matched up. My grandfather was Albert Eke, b July 1890 Holborn to Laura (Burgess) and Robert James Eke (the name on his birth certificate) although it could be William Robert Eke - the name of his father on his marriage certificate! Even more confusing the census has him as James Robert Eke. All I know is that he was born in Norfolk, possibly Dereham/Dedham or Fakenham around 1840. He was an engineer/inventor and lived in Chelsea around the 1900s. Any help much appreciated! Best wishes Jane

Sorry, Jane, but none of these names crop up in my file. But there seems to have been lots of Ekes in Norfolk, so don't be discouraged. I would suggest that you put this data into a query on RootsChat - I've found that is a really good way to get information. Please let me know if you get any other, earlier names - they may yet track back to someone on my tree, and we can then share information.
