I am descended from a family of Eks from Sala, Sweden. The furthest-back ancestor I know of is Anders Ek of Sala, born 1799. Most of the Eks in Sala were silver miners. My great-grandfather, Gustaf Victor Ek, born 1868, emigrated to America in 1888. He joined his brother, Karl Johan Ek, who had emigrated in 1887. They settled in northern Wisconsin. Karl Ek died shortly afterward in a hunting accident of some kind. I have found no record of his death, but am still searching.
In America, Gustaf Victor Ek went by the name Victor Oak, and, eventually, Oakes, which is my name today.
I have located Ek relatives in Sala. One, Ihrene Ek, born 1957, has traced the family history in Sala to 1799. She thinks the Ek name may have come from Ander's father, who may have been a soldier.
Any further insight anyone may offer into the origin of our family or name would be greatly appreciated.

I have several relatives named Ek , and Eck on both sides of my grands. I have a Gustaf and a Victor, but no Gustaf Victor. All my relatives came from Minnesota. I have most of the names going back to about 1860. If you think that some of your information may be incorrect, email me at bobx@iserv.net

My 2nd Great-Grandfather was Lars Ek, a blacksmith, from Sweden. His wife was Hedwig Jerv. Their son (my Great-Grandfather) was Charles Ek b.1863 in Sweden. He owned Ek's Grocery on 7th Broadway in St. Paul, MN. His wife's name was Anna Charlotte Moberg b. 1871 in Sweden. (A.G. Eck, probably a relative, signed his naturalization papers.) Hazel Pauline Ek b. 1899 in St. Paul, MN was my grandmother.

I am beginning to research my family history.
I live in Kansas. I don't know much about
the Ek name, except that it is of Swedish
origin. The story is that it used to be
Eklund or something similar and got
Americanized when immigrating to the Us.
My grandfather's name was Galen, his father-
Harry, and his father-Lars. If any of this
information is something you have seen somewhere
let me know. Thanks-Melissa

My great-grandfather's name was Erik Ek, who was born in Sweden. I am not sure what year he came over to the United States, but my grandmother was his only child born in the U.S. His other two were born in Sweden. My grandmother's d.o.b:5/17/1909. He was a guard for the King of Sweden at which time his name was changed to Ek. I believe my uncle told me that Erik's father's name was Anders.

Has anyone come across Theodore (Teodor) Ek who emigrated from Sweden in the beginning of the 1890´s. He was born in Farstorp in the early 1870´s. His fathers name was Martin Åkesson. The family moved to Osby 1877. Teodor Martinsson, during the military service in Kristianstad, changed his surname to Ek. After his emigration to Northern America he was never heard of.
Teodor was my grandfather´s brother. I am now living in the house in Sweden where Teodore was raised, and would like to find out as much as possible about my ancestors.

Melissa Ek - you are right Ek has a Swedish origin. Ek i a rather common surname in Sweden and so is Eklund, Ekdal among others.
Ek is Swedish for oak, lund means a collection of trees, dal is valley.

I have an Anders Ek in my family, but I don't think that he is the one that you are looking for. What peaked my interest is the name change to Ek. Was there a particular reason for that, and does the name Ek have anything to do with royal guards?

Anyway, here's my Ek info:

Anders Johan Svenson Ek
B March 9, 1828 Ramdala, Sweden
D April 3, 1893, Jamjo, Blekinge, Sweden

As far as I know he never came to the US.
